One play burns a year of eligibility. What you are referring to applies to a medical redshirt if he was injured during the first half of the season.

No because he's played this season. Getting on the field for even one play uses up a year of eligibility. Only exception is for a player who was injured early in the season, they can apply to the NCAA for a medical redshirt but NCAA has to grant approval on it.
