I haven't seen much posted about BYU having a game (weak opponent) as a tune up game. Obviously, no such warm up game for the Tigers. Given most coaches speak to a team's improvement between Week 1 and Week 2, is this a concern or a no issue?

Honestly LSU is in a better spot, offensive surprises BYU will not be ready for plus BYU risks injury playing game before no matter who they are playing.
LSU is better scrimmaging itself than playing a patsy.

Seen this posted a lot, actually.

Yes, it is a big concern and a big issue. Expect BYU to give us a helluva game. Getting to play a cupcake the week before while LSU is still rusty from 8+ months off is HUGE.

Quit whining. BYU is our warm up game. It would take their entire schedule for them to "warm up" enough and be ready for what the Tigers are gonna unleash on them.

Other than running out on the field and getting properly lined up in a few different formations, I'm not too sure how beneficial a game against Portland State will be for BYU. A team that weak (Portland State, not BYU) will pose nothing meaningful for BYU. BYU's 2's and 3's would give their starters a tougher look than Portland State.

So, for any younger guys at BYU who plan to take some meaningful snaps, it may help them some to just got properly lined up and to experience a new atmosphere.

I like LSU running against our guys and then getting a chance to kick their feet up and watch the players and plays that they'll be going up against the following week.

You make fair points, but I just can't agree. I'd prefer to get a game under our belt all things considered.

You act like it will be their first time to put on pads since NYE

LSU being in a better spot is laughable. There is no advantage whatsoever to not having a tuneup game vs a team that has already had one. Experience is king in football. None of this will most likely matter because I expect LSU to handle business but it's absolutely beneficial to BYU having a tuneup game.

Scrimmages do not compare to actual game speed either. Totally different animal.

You haven't been following then.

I think BYU will have a very vanilla game plan. Will not show many offensive formations or plays, and will minimize blitz packages. They will not run up the score, and play pretty conservatively. LSU will have minimal film.

I think the in-house LSU scrimmages are just as effective for "tuneing" up, at least for a BYU game.

Let's face it, BYU has had the same team for 30 years. Power run, stout O and D line with a slightly above average QB.

The Portland State game may actually hurt BYU. Warming up against a weak team gives the better team a false perception of themselves. What works against Portland State's talent will not work the same against LSU's talent. Throw in the possible injuries, too.

I'd say advantage BYU, but with a new offense I'd rather us not have a game before them so they have no film of us.

So while it would be very advantageous to us if it were both of our first games, the current situation is not as bad as if we both had a game before we played each other.

I agree with this on paper based on the size and skill of the athletes, but it is an advantage to have a game under your belt (even against a weaker team).

LSU fans lost their shite when Va Tech added a game prior to the 2002 Va Tech game in Blacksburg.

Guess the outrage was justified based on the result of that game.

In fact The Rant opened up to the masses August 2002, and it was probably the first thing LSU fans bitched about on this site.

At least we get to see the game since ESPN is televising it. I think LSU fans that expect LSU to blowout BYU are in for a surprise.

I'm talking a blowout. 35 points or more.

Does BYU have anyone comparable to Deangelo Hall, Lee Suggs, or Kevin Jones?

You are wrong about scrimmages being just as effective. You can't simulate game speed and it doesn't matter if it's BYU. BYU isn't Nicholls State, they will have some capable athletes running around.
