Well, I'm not a native. I lived there while going to LSU, but that was it. Like I said, BR isn't the best, but you take everything into account when sizing up college towns. First, you look at the location where the college sits. LSU's campus is beautiful. You have unique architecture, the lakes, the oaks, the Indian Mounds, the Greek Amphitheater, the memorial tower, Coates Hall bathroom, etc. Also, right outside of the north gates and the classic live venue, the Varsity Theatre, you have some bustling ghettos with lots of culture.

BR has it's shithole aspects and areas for sure (shitty traffic too), but there are nice areas too. I don't see how it's that terrible. Plus you have some casinos, a water park, an amusement park, the zoo, etc. And of course, we take for granted all the great Louisiana food served up in the restaurants/bar & grills (food typically gets shittier when you leave Louisiana in general).

I'm not going to say that where I live is the best place in the world, I'll only say that it is better than Baton Rouge.

I've lived in multiple cities, each very different, each with its own detractors. Maybe that is why I think so little of Baton Rouge, I have spent considerable elsewhere.

Nashville is a great town that also has a college in it.
