How does this work? Does LSU get less money for going to the Outback than lets say Bama in the Sugar bowl?

Yes, but not a lot less because the SEC takes a vast majority of all the bowl money and divides it equally among all the SEC schools, bowl participants or not.

each school get their traveling expenses. They are typically more for the larger games. Then it goes into a pot and is split.

Money is split by the SEC. Outside of travel expenses teams dont make a whole lot of money more. It benefits the SEC as a whole to have two SEC teams make the BCS games. But LSU going to Outback instead of Peach doesnt net LSU really any more payour.

Kentucky gets to sit at home and collect money.

quote:

For bowl games with receipts <$1.5M, the participating school retains $925k plus travel expenses; the remainder is remitted to the SEC.

*For bowl games with receipts of $1.5M or more, but <$4M, the participating school retains $1.125M plus travel expenses; the remainder is remitted to the SEC.

*For bowl games with receipts of $4M or more, <$6M, the participating school retains $1.325M plus travel expenses; the remainder is remitted to the SEC.

*For bowl games with receipts of >$6M, the participating school retains $1.825M ($1.925M if it's the MNC); the remainder is remitted to the SEC.

All of the money that is remitted to the SEC above is pooled; the SEC and each member school get 1/13 of the pool.

See Section 31.21.1 of the below link for full details.

So AU gets 800k + diff in travel expenses if any more than LSU.
