Les has beaten everyone on that list, that he's faced, except Mack Brown and Joe Pa, at least once.

I really like Pat Fitzgerald, and think he is very good for Northwestern, but there is no way he is the #4 coach in the country. And Spurrier is way over the hill.

I'm not saying that Les is the best coach of all time, but there is no coach ahead of him on this list that I would want more than him

1. Nick Saban (Legit Top 5)

2. Chris Petersen (Legit Top 5)

3. Bob Stoops (Too High)

4. Pat Fitzgerald (Legit Top 5)

5. Gary Patterson (Legit Top 5)

6. Steve Spurrier (Too High - past his prime)

7. Brian Kelly (Wait and see. I think he may be top five, but I want to see how this year at ND plays out)

8. Bobby Petrino (He's a good coach. Too low here)

9. Mack Brown (Way to high. Most overrated coach in CFB)

10. Joe Paterno (Way past his prime. Too high)

11. Les Miles (Legit Top 10)

12. Frank Beamer (Legit Top 10)

I'm ok with Saban and Stoops ahead of him. I used to think Brian Kelly was the man but I'm already starting to think he may not be able to hack it at a big boy program.

The others are unproven at the big time level or approaching washed up status.

Paterno is a joke. He should be in the bottom 12. He is a liability to that program right now.

1. Nick Saban (Legit Top 5) - agreed

2. Chris Petersen (Legit Top 5) -agreed

3. Bob Stoops (Too High) -If you like losing Big Games and never reaching potential. 10 years since MNC

4. Pat Fitzgerald (Legit Top 5) - Jury's still out

5. Gary Patterson (Legit Top 5) - Agrred

6. Steve Spurrier (Too High - past his prime) - Agreed with comment

7. Brian Kelly (Wait and see. I think he may be top five, but I want to see how this year at ND plays out) - Based on winning the BE and getting throttled in 2 BCS bowls and leading ND to the Sun Bowl?

8. Bobby Petrino (He's a good coach. Too low here) -Very little hardware

9. Mack Brown (Way to high. Most overrated coach in CFB) --Too few Conference Championships. Losing record with arguable the most resources of any team in the country

10. Joe Paterno (Way past his prime. Too high)- Agreed

11. Les Miles (Legit Top 10) - Look at the record and there are 10 coaches better? Please

12. Frank Beamer (Legit Top 10)-Agreed

In my opinion, I would argue that the following are marginally better than Miles (which isn't to say he is bad):

Saban
Peterson
Fitzgerald
Patterson
Petrino
C. Kelly (maybe)
B. Kelly (maybe)
Fischer (maybe)
Bielema (maybe)
Gundy (maybe)

Outside of Saban, no one on this list has close to the talent Miles has. In college football, unlike the NFL, you have to figure out a way to win football games with what you've got. Most of these guys do this.

I agree Stoops is too high.

At least if we make it to the big games with Les, I am confident in his ability to coach us to a win

He only has the title "Coach." He doesn't actually do any.

no its not. hes a nice coach, NWern is lucky to have him, but hes not in the top 12 in the country. hes never had a season of less than 5 losses. hes never won a bowl game(even shitty ones), and of course has ZERO hardware. i would love to know what the biggest win of his career is. he has tough academics to deal with and other obstacles, but thats life. almost averaging 7 wins a year doesnt make this list. what a joke

Way to view things in a vacuum.

Northwestern is the Vanderbilt of the Big Ten. He has no talent. There is not one single player on his team that would start for a top ten program. Yet, he still wins 8-9 games a year and constantly knocks off big programs.

Miles and Saban only won 8-9 games a year at programs with much more talent than Northwestern and once they were able to get to a program that could attract recruits, they skyrocketed to the top of coaching lists.

FWIW, when all the Miles to Michigan talk started last year, Fitzgerald would have been #1 on my list for Miles' replacement.

I understand what you're saying, but would you have wanted him if Miles wasn't going to Michigan? Which one of those coaches would you get rid of miles for?

For me NONE of em!

Peterson has done a great job at Boise. That cannot be denied however he did not build the program. Koetter and Hawkins did to a large extent.

Hawkins had won more than 80% of his games there and darn near every Conf game.

Boise under Peterson has some nice wins but they still play about 8 or 9 gimme games a year.

While Pererson may do better than Hawkins (could not do worse) if he got a job in a BCS Conf until he does and proves it on a bigger stage I think top 5 is way premature.
