Derrick Taylor and Ethan Martin were very good.
This. CJ was obviously the best scorer, but those guys were better pure point guards.

Ethan Martin was the best without a doubt. He could handle the ball under pressure, distribute the ball as needed and score when necessary. He could hit free throws in the clutch. He was oppressive on defense. He had really long arms and was very quck.
If he could have been on the team with Shaquille et al they could have won it all because they needed someone with all those specific talents.
Chris Jackson was the second best player I have ever seen. He was not point guard and wasn't great on defense and he looked to score first and distribute second. The big guys needed to have someone who could run the offense and get them the ball.i

CJ was a scorer and showman. This guy was a point guard. Best ever at LSU.

LSu was bested in the 70's until the mid 80's with 3 outstanding pg's:
Ethan Martin was the best overall of those 3
Derrick Taylor
Kenny Higgs
Chris Jackson was more of a scoring 2 guard than a pg.

Someone else said it perfectly; Chris Jackson was a fantastic player and scorer, but wasn't a great point guard.
Ethan Martin was possibly the best pure point guard we've ever had in terms of running the offense and terrorizing the opponent. Wasn't much of a jump shooter, but was never needed to be (we had Hi C, Jordy and Willie Sims hitting J's back then). People need to understand that he played in a time where there was no 3 point shot, so the goal was to get the best percentage shot (and feeding Macklin etc was a better option than jacking it up from the top of the key).
Derrick Taylor played a couple years too soon; had he played with a 3 point shot he'd have been way more lauded. Seemed like he could hit from the top of the key out to about 27 feet and be money. But again, that was still just a 2, and it was better to get the ball to Nikita Wilson for a baseline turnaround.
I think Darryl Joe was the best defender. He was 6 ft, but had the wingspan of a 6'9 guy. He stole the shite of the the ball.
