I posted this on the Score Board just before it shut down, so thought I would re-post it here.

I know it's against the religion of some of the morons on this board to look at and think about actual facts before spouting off about any subject under the sun, but for those who would like to base their opinions on real live data, here are some of our more important offensive stats from 2005-2011. I wish I could put this all in the form of a chart, but I'm limited by the format.

points per game
2005 29.5
2006 33.7
2007 38.6
2008 30.9
2009 24.8
2010 29.7
2011 35.7

first downs rushing passing penalty
2005 118 119 18
2006 129 138 16
2007 153 146 17
2008 122 114 18
2009 100 109 17
2010 132 84 12
2011 164 97 26

attempts per game rushes passes
2005 869 509(59%) 360(41%)
2006 818 450(55) 368(45)
2007 1054 612(58) 442(42)
2008 886 495(56) 391(44)
2009 771 435(56) 336(44)
2010 839 538(64) 301(36)
2011 870 591(68) 279(32)

yardage per game rushing passing
2005 374.1 150.1 224
2006 417.5 165.8 251.7
2007 439.4 214.1 225.3
2008 368.1 166.8 201.3
2009 304.5 122.8 181.8
2010 341.3 185.7 155.6
2011 355.1 202.6 152.5

There are a lot of things one can glean from such information, but the big take-away for me is that, until 2010, our passing and running game were relatively balanced. It is only in 2010 and 2011 that we have skewed so heavily to the running game.

So those who accuse Miles of being one-dimensional in his offensive thinking are ignoring history. The big problem over the past two years has simply been that we have not had a QB that we could trust enough to pass for 40% or more of our plays.

Now, these stats don't say much about the types of passing plays we are running, the number of short, medium, and long plays, etc. But they do confirm what I had suspected, based on my memories of the LSU offense during the first several years of Miles's tenure: we generally run an offense that is more or less 60% rushing and 40% passing, which is a pretty good percentage.

Just realize one thing. Les has taken more and more control of the offense since 2008, and that is why the disparity has gotten so bad.

After 2008 he got spooked as many have said, and has seemed to have taken overall control of the scheme and play ratios. There is a reason he hasn't hired another legit OC since finding out Krags had Parkinsons.

I would like to see a play chart of the plays we run. Because don't throw deep and we don't throw over the middle of the field. I'm betting 75% of the pass plays are less than 20yds and on the outer thirds of the field. Not to hard to defense that.

Yep, I agree that there are other stats that could give us a better perspective on the way the offense has worked (or not) over the past few years. It would take some rather detailed film work to compile such stats, unfortunately. Somebody posted a study of our 2012 passing game earlier this week in which someone had broken down our completions to show the information you want. It was pretty revealing. I don't remember the title of the thread, but it appeared sometime between Monday and Wednesday, if I'm remembering correctly.

My point here was just to show that Miles ran a pretty balanced offense for several years, and the recent skewing of the offense toward the run game obscures that in many people's minds.

It's clear that Miles has changed his approach over the past few years, but I think a lot of it has to to with the quality of QB play since Matt Flynn left.

Its not the raw statistics of how many runs vs passes or yards by Mode of Transport - its situational play calling. We always seem to do what the other team is expecting - minus a few fake FGs/Punts here and there.

Here is my take... some may not agree and that's OK.
As a business person/consultant, when things do not add up, you wait and continue to gather facts until "something" emerges. My picture is not complete, but I do not like what is developing...

In the NC game, we totally ignored the OFFENSIVE personnel .. asst coaches, players, etc and Miles, stubbornly, stuck to Jefferson, even though I hear that Jefferson himself asked to be replaced.

Nothing made any sense then and since we have been winning, the absence of OFFENSIVE philosophy has been ignored by all, even myself.

BUT, yesterday's performance tells me that there is much more behind the walls of which we do not know.... it seems as a stubborn and continuous effort to not use OFFENSIVE personnel... (asst coaches and players)...and certainly a diluted OFFENSIVE philosophy...almost as if Miles thinks he can win without input from anyone else.

I think a wedge was driven at the NC game between Miles and the OFFENSIVE "people". Admitting such or bringing that out, such as firing any coaches would mean that Miles had indeed been hard-headed and stubborn, so nothing has happened, or been mentioned. Miles has taken control of the entire team and we are having pitiful performances...as I said, as long as we were winning, all was ignored by all.

There is a saying in coaching " when you are winning, you enemies can not hurt you, but when you are losing, your friends can not help you."

If we were to start losing, I see a lot of stuff starting to come out.
I hope we win and things fix themselves, but frankly, we may be seeing the beginning of the self administered demise of Miles if he sticks to THIS STYLE OF FOOTBALL we are playing.....with USC(e), TX A & M and Alabama, and the other games coming.

Time will tell, but one thing I am sure of is that "something is happening/has hapenned behind the walls between Miles, Asst Coaches and Players.

I sure hope they place the good of LSU first.

Look at the QBs we had in the years (2005-2007):
J Russel then M Flynn (above average college QBs)

J Lee and J Jefferson (below average QBs) thus more need to run.

Mett?? Jury still out, but not looking very promising.
