Lynn Rollins was asked by his broadcast partner just now if in baseball, does a first baseman have to wear a first basemen's mitt. I've always thought that was the case and if so, Lynn, a former umpire is wrong.
What say you guys?

Why would that be a rule? I thought the only person that has to wear a certain type of glove was the pitcher and that had to do with color

I've always been told first basemen can wear any type glove they want to use but other position players are not allowed to use a first baseman's mitt.

I do think a pitcher's glove's color is specifically mentioned in the rule book. I have not read one in so long I could be wrong on all this.
I do recall in a high school game many years ago a kid caught a ball in the outfield using a first baseman's mitt and the opposing manager charged out and the umpire declared it illegal use of equipment and the hitter was ruled not out.
I also thought, and am probably wrong, that a first baseman had to use a first baseman's mitt just as a catcher has to use a catcher's mitt.

This is correct.

He can wear a catchers mitt if he wants.

Gloves are only limited by size & color. You can play centerfield with a catcher's mitt if it is the proper size. Updated - I may be mistaken. Am checking rules.

I don't think so unless there's some strange college rule.
The Twins had a 1B a few years back (SP? Miekiewicz) who used a regular glove.

No, first baseman don't have to wear a first base mitt. Only two positions CAN use a first base mitt, 1st and catcher.

Vic Powers, a major league player with Cleveland in the 60's, used a first base man's mitt in the outfielder.

in cpm father's bio - had a player use a glove that was for the other hand

Well it won't happen now. Only first and catcher can use one.

Rollins has sucked since he was at Channel 5 in Alexandria decades ago.

I don't have a clue, so I looked up the current NCAA baseball rules. You can get a free PDF.
They say:
Gloves or Mitts
SECTION 13
The catcher may wear a glove or mitt of any dimension.
b. The first baseman’s glove or mitt must not be more than 13 inches long or 8 inches wide. {details about webbing, size, how to measure, etc.}
c. Every player except the catcher and first baseman is restricted to the use of a fielder’s glove not more than 13 inches long nor more than 8 inches wide. {details about how to measure}
d. The pitcher’s glove may not be white or gray, exclusive of piping nor, in the
judgment of the umpire, be distracting in any way.

This is what I thought was the rule. Same with catcher's mitt.
