We obviously have some talented freshman on this team. What do you think their "peaks" as college baseball players are? Specifically guys seeing a lot of time this year like Smith, Watson, Slaughter, Woley, and Walker, Hess, Beck, Peterson, and Bush.

Not so much their ceilings, but their prime years at LSU.

You're a very good baseball player if you are first team all-SEC in any capacity.

I think smith is a future 2 hole hitter. Either SS or 2nd base
Don't know what to think about Slaughter. I think he has a bit of pop in his bat, but the strikeouts
Walker will end up throwing on Friday
Hess could be a Saturday guy. Maybe even Friday?

Smith is the next great defensive LSU shortstop under CPM. Could develop into being the second best hitter of the group.
Slaughter has the highest up side. He could develop and have top end power and play third base.
Walker's career will probably be similar to Poche's and maybe a little better.
Watson will play center field until he leaves and I think can develop some consistent powers by the time he leaves. He's not very big but ball seems to jump off his bat.
Hess has the highest upside as a pitcher. Could have a Gausman type year next year and be gone.
Peterson and Bush are project guys that could develop into very good pitchers.

Unfortunately yes he is but those guys are a crapshoot when it comes to leaving or going. They have the ultimate leverage as they have that extra year to play with. Anything after the top three rounds could go either way.

This freshman class needed to be strong and by all accounts it has been. Just my predictions, so don't write this down in pen.

Josh Smith will take over at SS next year and will be an ALL-SEC type of performer.

Jake Slaughter is one of the most talented defensive 1B Mainieri has ever had, his bat will come around and he'll solidify the infield for years to come.

Zach Watson will not give up the centerfield spot as long as he's in a tiger uniform. He's the fastest player on this roster and his ability to drive the ball will improve when he matures in the weight program.

Rankin Woley and Mason Templet will both be expected to show power by their sophomore and junior years. Right now you wonder where will they get on the field if it's DH or 1B or even 3B, honestly too early to tell.

Zach Hess will be the Friday night guy next year, I say this because he's a draft eligible sophomore. No use in not seeing if he can tote the rock like Gausman did in 2012 before becoming a very high draft choice.

Eric Walker will be the Saturday guy next season. I foreshadow a 4 year career ala Jared Poche for this young man where he'll be a dependable workhorse and backbone of the rotation.

Todd Peterson and Matthew Beck will compete for the Sunday spot where the loser turns into the long reliever ala Austin Bain right now.

If Blayne Enlow or Nick Storz make it to campus the tigers actually won't have such a bad rotation in 2018.

I think Beck can develop into a damn good Saturday/Sunday starter for us. If not a starter, then a really good middle relief pitcher.

This is true but I see him playing third next year if Smith is playing short. His defensive ability would be better served at third base than at first and CPM puts defense at third as a priority over defense at first.

Those three with Dup will make our 1-4 pretty nasty again next year. Slaughter may develop power like Deich, but overall they will have more pop than 1-4 this year, and could be better average wise, also.

Who would you have at 1B?

He definitely could play 3B or even 2B and I know exactly where you're getting at however at the same time anyone who's ever fielded ground balls will tell you they'd rather throw to someone who's 6'2 vs someone who's 5'10.

LSU will still have Coomes, Woley, Reid, and Templet before even considering the incoming recruits so there will be options at each position.

I don't know next year is a long way away. I'm just thinking of how CPM thinks and he values defense at third over first. Going into the season it was said a lot that Slaughter would play first this year then transition to third when Smith goes to short.

Not a Freshman, but where does Gilbert stand? Takes Newmans spot?
