With yesterday's game being nothing more then a glorfied scrimmage, there were aspects of both the offense & defense that were being tried out for the first time which can lead to bits of sloppiness. No one should get too high or too low about what we saw last night. There were positives to get us excited & negatives that will give the coaching staff plenty of film to use as teaching tools to get the players better prepared moving forward.

One of the positives from last night, when given the opportunity, was Mett's two throws over the middle. One in the first half, came up just short of a first down on a third & 20+. The second was his first touchdown pass of the season. The running game seems to be just as powerful as it was a year ago but those throws over the middle will be the type that will have to be made to beat better defenses especially Bama.

The most concerning aspect of the game plan offensively from last night was the lack of attacking the seams by the offense. This is the area where you can really hurt a defense vertically especially against the 3-4 that Bama runs. Michigan hit on two deep throws last night in the seams against Bama which tells me that their young secondary may not be as disciplined at this point & time as the 2011 squad was. As they hit conference play that secondary will continue to get tested in the seams especially against Arkansas & Tennessee.

Hopefully, the offensive coaching staff will implement more routes & throws in the seams so that it becomes a part of the game plan.

Its only one game but the running game looks great again & I expect the passing game to improve moving forward. Hopefully we get to see the seams attacked more because the ability to do so will surely come in handy later in the season.

Line play and play action will make or break. Mett has to recognize blitzes and zone coverages a heck of a lot better.

This is true. I think now, with actual game film, the coaching staff can pinpoint to Mett his mistakes & help him in getting a better grip on his presnap reads.

The point I was trying to make is that I believe this year's squad will be able to over power the opposition with the run game outside of numerous turnovers & Bama of course.

The areas to attack the base 3-4 in the passing game is on top of the two inside linebackers & underneath the safeties & down the seams as well. An offense can expose the LB's from the slot position by stretching them wide & vertically downfield.

It's going to be necessary to have these routes as part of the offense to be able to have success throwing the ball against the Tide which in return will lead to better balance. It would be nice to see this worked on early so that the timing is there later in the season.

You'll see a lot of improvement over the first few games of the season, especially for a QB who's never played in real games before. There will be improvement. He has really nice touch on his deep ball. You can see the talent there for sure.

Tiger Stadium doesn't have seams, only flats and we've attacked the flats endlessly

I have no doubt Mett will improve. I really liked some of the things I saw from him last night. The things he has to work on will only get better as he gets more snaps under his belt.

My issue from last night had to do more with the lack of seam routes run by our receivers. It was obvious that the offensive coaching staff wanted to work on the short passing game last night which is fine but its going to be the ability to attack the seams that will pay the most dividends later on in the season.

I really enjoy reading posts like yours. Please ignore crap like the two posts following your original. Talking strategy intelligently is too rare on this board.

I don't think they wanted to throw too much at the qb in the first game. They're working on things, like you said, until the game slows down for him. With his deep accuracy I'd imagine they're keeping the downfield stuff in their back pockets, at least for the first game.

It'll be interesting to see what they do against Washington. The team will definitely be able to dominate at the point and run the ball, probably for 250 yards, so he won't need to throw 30 passes, but I'll be curious to see whether or not they try to push it a little more now that he's had a week to get settled in.

I think we both are on the same page here. I didn't expect a full out arial assault but 3-4 plays attacking the seams would have been nice just to have it on film which is the greatest teaching tool a coaching staff can possess. The learning process has to begin at some point & hopefully will see it begin next week as far throwing down the seams is concerned.
