On the SEC Rant there is a topic about bar room bad arse.

What I've been told, Cantrelle was in fights daily. No exaggeration.

Common knowledge that football players headed to The Gold Coast, West Baton Rouge, foot of the old bridge and picked fights with the locals. Club Carousel, San Souci all open till 5 AM on the weekends.

Found this article about his time in the CFL. He is remembered as a bad arse there too.

Where's Art Cantrelle today? I unearth his home phone number in Biloxi, Mississippi. "The number you have reached," says the recorded voice of the operator, "is not in service for incoming calls."

That is good stuff. I posted on the SEC Rant that it would be a good article for some reporter to interview him and seperate fact from fiction.

I heard he beat up three Lafayette cops in a bar fight. Someone posted they were Baton Rouge cops.

The main problem is what reporter has the balls to do it?

Cantrell won a TR straw poll on who was the toughest/meanest Tiger football player, by a landslide. There are a 1000 stories about him out there, but a friend of mine likes to tell this one when Cantrell's name comes up. Friend was a BRP sherriff's deputy, stationed at the office near the old Keg. He said that many times, when a call would come in regarding a fight at the bar with Cantrell involved, more than a few deputies would duck out the back door.On a Wed afternoon, out of season, a call came in. He was a relatively new deputy so he was curious as to what all the fuss was about. He went with 3 other deputies, 2 weighing over 250 lbs & as they entered the bar, they could see Cantrell playing a pen ball machine...they paid off back then...in a far corner. Taking only a few steps inside, one of the bigger deputies yelled at Cantrell to come along quietly. Cantrell didn't blink or hesitate: he picked up the pen ball machine like it was a piece of foam rubber, swung it around & walked steadily towards the deputies. Not saying a word. As he approached, he started swinging it back & forth, staring into one set of eyes at a time. The lead deputy immediately called for backup, went back outside to wait. 3 units pulled up, 2 deputies in each & then & only then did the 10 deputies go back in side. Cantrell was sitting at the bar, just staring at them. It took 7 to jump him while the other 2 cuffed him. Charges dismissed down the road.

I was around in those days, a student, didn't know him personally , but knew some who did, and I will they say this:...Cantrelle was a complete arse**** ... not a "tough guy " - just an immature arrogant jerk with serious, serious anger management issues .. lucky he didn't end up in Angola where he could have "proved" his toughness over and over again .. hopefully he learned to chill with some maturity ...
