Are we blaming QBs for inept pass blocking?
Posted by Mayhawman on 9/12/10 at 11:40 am00
I could only follow via gamecast, but sensed the pass blocking was inept early.
We won't fare much better under Lee I'm afraid if that's the case.
If you go back and watch La Tech '09, you'll see that was most of Lee's 7/21 problem also, as he was throwing to the fans on quite a few incompletions.
Anyone think JJ got rattled early and never recovered?
From NOLA.com, unbiased ingame report.

The LSU offense has moved in fits and starts. The offensive line is having trouble blocking Vanderbilt. Russell Shepard has rushed for 50 yards on six carries but almost half came on the last drive which ended the half in LSU territory. He does have a 30-yard scoring run.
LSU quarterback Jordan jefferson has struggled. He's three of 12 with at least two dropped passes, but he's not handling the pressure well.
The teams have combined for 12 punts. Vanderbilt has two first downs.
The defense rose up and shut down the Commodores, who had the ball at the LSU 48 with more than a minute to play. Drake Nevis got LSU's fourth sack of the first half to keep Vandy from taking advantage of having a first and 120 at the LSU 48. The sack was for an 11-yard loss. Tyrann Mathieu broke up a pass on second down and the Tigers chased QB Larry SMith out of the pocket on third down to force a punt.
LSU is looking inept on offense. First, freshman running back Alfred Blue can't handle an option pitchout and it goes for a 15-yard loss to the LSU 5. Now Vandy is calling time trying to get another scoring chance. LSU will punt from its own 9-yard line. That's three fumbles so far and a very inconsistent peformance.
Second quarter, 5:27, LSU 10, Vanderbilt 0
LSU gets a 36-yard field goal from Josh Jasper. The Tigers started the drive at the Vanderbilt 31-yard line but the offensive line is having torouble protecting Jordan Jefferson. On third down Jefferson was pressured into an incompletion.
Second quarter, LSU 7, Vanderbilt 0
Promising drive ends because of a sack and then pressure on a third down pass. LSU O-line having some problems with pass blocking.

i haven't rewatched yet, but OL did not appear to be the problem. It's hard to tell live and without DVR, but my impression was the same as last year. jefferson makes the OL look awful because he locks in on one WR and when it isn't there he starts moving backwards and sideways. Simply put, he panics.

JJ wasn't running for his life last night. In fact, on most pass plays he had adequate time. He just wasn't getting the ball to the receivers.

Why does everybody always make as many excuses for Jefferson as they can... Seems like announcers do it to... Its always somebody elses fault.. its so fn old

To the OP: No.
T-Bob had nothing to do with JJ being unable to complete simple 6 yard passes. The one sack we had he held the ball, and held the ball, and held the ball, asked a chick for her phone number, then held the ball, held it some more then got sacked.

the times he was pressured, it was usually a safety blitz showing with plenty of time to audible out to a quick slant or a go against man coverage with zero help. same with a few bad running plays. safety comes up and he doesn't even see it to check out. Saban will have him so confused.

Based on what I remember the pass blocking was good early, run blocking early was the problem, JJ was high on many of his passes, and did not want to get rid of the ball, and lets face it if a QB holds the ball for longer than he should the protection will eventually break down no matter who is on the O-line

So you didn't watch the game, but it's not JJ's fault?
I think I mentioned I only followed via Gamecast and I asked about blocking, as both QBs have had problems with the rush.
I don't have an agenda against one QB or the other like you, JJ.

So will Mullen (sp)
Jefferson was terrible last night right from the start. He played fast which was uncharacteristic. Normally he's too deliberate, but last night he was trying to make something happen (trying to get into the zone read before the shotgun snap hit him in his hands, throwing every pass with max strength, inordinate amount of stutter stepping on the keepers).
But Miles realized something last night. His team can't runblock or passblock from the shotgun consistently. It's no threat. Teams stuff the run and gain penetration on basic stunts.
But if you put LSU in the I with a fullback, plethora of stud running backs, Big physical WR's, the offense starts winning. The Multi Look Zone Read offense doesn't fit this personnel. Get Under center, run the ball, then playaction. That's SEC winning football - I believe Miles has seen the light.

Both QBs have had problems with the rush? When? Lee wasn't touched yesterday and didn't play last week.
