So many posts about QB being our #1 ? Going into the season. But not much noise about lack of depth at LB and lack of experience at DEs. While I like our starting 3 at LB, particularly In the middle with Beckwidth, I am worried with our lack of depth (LBs) and experience (DEs) on the edges.

Yes is the correct answer. Maybe thompson can move from s to lb.

We have two seniors and three juniors in our two deep. Anyone who is concerned about LB depth for THIS year isn't paying attention.

Next year we may need to transition to a 4-2-5.

Fiest, alexander, and Riley are good great special teams players but SEC caliber linebackers???

I know duke is a fan favorite but anyone can see that he has limitations.

chilge is exactly right; depth will be a big issue next year. The LB depth this year is the best I can remember. We're two deep at every LB position with at least third year guys who have proven themselves as players (one second year guy in Alexander).

One of our DEs is a proven stud, and we have Clark, Tehuema, Neal and Bain who have had significant numbers of snaps. We have plenty of quality depth at DE. My only concern is that we have a second quality starter.

Just because we have a second string doesn't mean we are 2 deep. Alexander has hardly even seen the field.

Not really concerned about LB depth for 2015. Could be an issue, as far as experience goes, in 2016.

Not necessarily concerned about LB depth this year. I do think DE is a question mark though. We have to find a way to get pressure on the QB and get more sacks. 19 sacks (7 of which were against Sam Houston St.) won't cut it.

Maybe next year. As of right now we have a beast Jr MLB, probably the best in the sec and two seniors on the edge with lots of speed and experience in Debo and Louis. Im not worried at all especially with Steele as the LBer coach

Our true Des are slim but we have a lot of dl depth. Neal, bower, clark, bain, teuhema, key. 2 out of 5 of those will step up.

Had more sacks in one series last year than Hunter had on the season...

Not knocking Hunter, but I am excited to see what some of these kids can do. I long for a return to the days when LSU defenses were feared by opposing quarterbacks for more than just our secondary.

If you have concerns about the D at all it has to be at those two spots. LB depth is a concern because none of the back ups have played much. Doesn't mean they will not perform well when called upon. I think LSU has only eight total on ships this year and five haven't done much so far and two are new to the position.

DEs would be next, but the back ups there have a played a bit more than the LBs and two more are coming as well.

Donnie Alexander played a lot on special teams and showed that he is an SEC level athlete. This surprised me, because based on high school, I didn't think he would pan out. But he has panned out, and early too. It doesn't prove he'll be a good LB, but that's always the situation with backups. If you're concerned about that, you' d better be concerned about OL, DT, safeties, corners, TE's, WRs, QBs, and RBs

Penrod, I have agreed with many of your comments in the past. I agree on your point about Donnie. However, I assume you have no concerns whatever with this years team and I hope you are correct.

I say that because you referenced every other position group on the field in your last sentence. Other than QB which from what we have seen is a cause for concern, how could you possibly equate LB depth with the OL, TEs, WRs, RBs, DTs, and DBs.

Yes Beckwith looked good, Debo and Lamar have had their moments and are four year players. Duke has played some. Donnie and Ronnie not so much at LB. Devon and Patterson have zero snaps at LB. No incoming guys are LBs. I'm not going to take the time to lay out LSUs entire depth chart with comments on each player because I think this is self evident.

Perhaps LB will turn out to be a strength and some groups will be weaker than expected...no guarantees and surprises happen to all teams good or bad yearly. Right now in July, I have concerns with QB play, LB and DE play. The rest of the groups not so much. Clearly this could change by the end of September.

Coach steele is use to having big 3-4 alabama backers so small 4-3 Chavis backers. Not doubting him though. Players will play for him.

NotRight, I've been extremely critical of the uneven nature of LSU recruiting. We're always "filling needs" instead of recruiting a balanced class of 5 OL, 4 DL, 3 LB, 5 DBs, 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 or 2 QB, 2 TE. Our LB recruiting the last two years has been apalling, and it will likely result in poor LB play.

However, I believe quality depth, as a rule, comes from third and fourth year guys. Folks often point out that we've seen freshmen contribute greatly, and we have. We've also seen young players cost us games because they blew an assignment

This year our LB backups will be two third year players and a second year guy. All three are proven to be athletic enough for the job. And that's about all we can hope for, imo.

If Beckwith leaves we lose all of our starters for next year. We need everything to go well in order to be good at LB in 2016. Our freshman recruits, while maybe impressive, can't be counted on. So Alexander, Feist and Duke better be good. And Patterson and Vooheries better develop well. Even then we'll be thin.

I'm hoping Les gets lucky, and all these things work out for 2016.
