Much of the pre-season speculation about LSU's upcoming season is based on having to replace 7 of 11 starters on defense. Last night, I attended an event and one of the guys who spoke commented on this. He wasn't referring to LSU specifically but teams like LSU, who lost several starters. He said it doesn't mean a whole lots because with the difference "packages" defensive coordinators use, lots of players play. He said the returning starters deal strictly refers to the guys who played the first play of the game. This gives me a little more hope that LSU's defense may not suffer as bad as some think it will.

While technically true, they are almost always the best player at their position. Which means their loss will be felt more often than not.

When your starters admit to taking plays off what's it matter?

All the starters who left made their names in 2011. Our new starters will be motivated to make a name for themselves this year. Our defense will be better than last year.

Me and Harry here see eye to eye on this..

I am going to blow your mind here: The defense will be BETTER than last year. The bottom line is that our talent level is as good or better than it has been from top to bottom. The difference between this years defense and last years is that this years defense has a ton to prove. Not one single player on the defense can mail it in and expect to go to the league, because none of them have done anything to warrant it. This year they will. They are hungry, they are talented, they are fast, and they have Chavis.

Reid, Montgomery, Mingo, Simon, Logan, Tyrann, were all worse last season.

Mingo did not take a step back because of effort. He regressed because Montgomery and Logan regressed, and Brockers left.

Tyrann did not play, so there ya go. Minter is the only guy that I was disapointed that left. That being said we are deeper at the linebacker position than we have ever been since Chavis arrived.

The offense will be better
The defense will be better
Special teams will be the same

LSU 2013 will be better than LSU 2012

I'll go out on a limb and say that you probably could have figured that out on your own.

The offense virtually returns everyone. So glad Copeland came back. and they upgraded at receiver.

To me that is more important because LSU has the talent to replace on the Defensive side. I believe it's easier bc of said packages and all that talent combined with speed.

This isn't exactly a secret. LSU rotates heavily on defense. Most of the new "starters" have seen significant playing time. For example, Ego and Freak probably played about a 3rd of the snaps on the D-line last year.

Even at safety, Ronald Martin played and I believe even had a pick or two.

The bigger issue this year is that our experienced depth is low. However, after the first few games that should be sorted out.

If we stay healthy, we will be OK on defense.

Another HUGE factor is simply better offense. If the offense can keep the ball away from other teams and put together sustainable drives then our defense won't have to do as much and won't get as worn down.

I am very optimistic that we will be all around better this year than last and we weren't too shabby last year.

Better offense = better defense in 2013

I wouldn't bet the farm on this last piece. I hope so, but the PK issue is still too unsettled to really back that up.

Not so fast my friend!

Special teams will not be as good. Punter as good, return as good (maybe better), kickoffs as good, but field goal kicking is a huge question mark and could easily cost us a game or two this year.
