He thinks that because other states have the lottery, that they can offer more scholarships to baseball players.

He's misinformed, but that won't stop him from complaining about it.

If I'm not mistaken it's basically like Louisiana's TOPS program and this clown thinks that the sponsoring of in state students going to in state colleges is some how limiting the number of scholarships that AU and Bama can offer to their baseball players.

If they think not having the lottery hurts them then they have no one to blame but the voters in their own state.

I always thought the argument wasn't that all schools weren't limited to the same # of scholarships but that teams in states with education lotteries could supplement their team with good players on academic/lottery scholarships that don't count against the baseball limit. If that is in fact the case, having a lottery CAN be a pretty big advantage. It doesn't account for a program being great but it doesn't hurt.

TOPS is an academic merit scholarship. Alabama and Auburn don't offer those?

TOPS is a state scholarship. Alabama doesn't have state scholarships, just institutional ones. No different than being awarded a scholarship from LSU.

TOPS money does not come from Lottery money If I remember correctly. Alabama legislators and citizens should push for state scholarships (which have been a great asset to the kids in Louisiana) in their state and maybe learn from what Louisiana did and how Tops has been set up. But they have nobody to blame but themselves for not having a state scholership. Furthermore if it is that big an issue maybe they should set up some special academic scholarships directed toward the baseball program? Not sure specifically about the rules and how they apply towards the 11.7 but there has to be a way around the rule for academic scholarships.

Last I heard, I think GA has a TOPS-like program too...we see how that worked out for UGA baseball.

ETA: it is called the HOPE program...not as good as TOPS but covers $1,800/semester.

There's HOPE

Maybe they should send a few dollars from football to the baseball program.

Even if it is an advantage for everyone but Bama and Auburn, it's a personal problem for them. There state legislature could fix it l if they wanted to. Someone should give him a lily pad to tinkle on.

same program exists in Tennessee too. Tennessee covers up to 3 grand a semester. the only schools in the SEC located in states without a state lottery are the MS and AL schools. I'm not sure if MS has a state funded scholarship program or not. Regardless, AL fans can complain to their state legislatures about that.

In theory, it appears to be an advantage, but as a practical matter, I say it has no real effect. If there were no TOPS in La, LSU would still be able to attract top flight talent.

If player A couldn't/wouldn't come to LSU because he is only getting 1/2 scholarship, there would be player B waiting to take his place.

GA - lottery funded scholarships - bad team - coach quit.

AU & Bama - No state funded "lottery" scholarships - mediocre teams.

Vandy - No state funded scholarships - good team

LSU - Some state, merit based scholarships - great team

There is no correlation between lottery scholarships and baseball success like Billy Bob War Eagle was mumbling to say.
