I think it's absolutely a surprise he's in the mix to start right away at ILB when he was supposed to be a RB just about all along. Not to mention it's not like we have no other upper classmen LBs he's competing against (Riley, Alexander, Voorhies, Thompson).

6'1" and a ripped 255. Just a true freshman. That's terrifying. I still looked like a skinny kid at 18.

I wouldn't say he's a surprise, since we knew he would be special. Kid is a beast.

Considering every player is in year one of learning Aranda's scheme, the upperclassmen's experience is marginalized. White being uniquely developed athletically definitely helps.

You think it's a suprise? You who follow recruiting and had seen/heard countless times through White himself, coaches and scouts about him likely playing LB? Why in the world would he not be in the mix? We will be running a lot of 3-4, we have no natural ILB outside of Beckwith and the walk on from this year, the others have shown absolutely nothing to warrant just starting by default, and this guy is a physical freak and will only get better as he learns the position. Think of Darron Lee who dominated as a redshirt freshman at Ohio St. Or true freshman Raekwon McMillan from that same team.

I get the logic here, but it's not true. Learning a new scheme is one thing. But that's not going to "marginalize" the experience of having played against future NFL players in hostile environments. Even the most talented young football players often fold under that kind of pressure.

Also, practically speaking, th nuts and bolts of playing the position for the interior linemen and ILBs isn't as dissimilar in a 3-4 scheme as it will be for DE/OLB.

All that said, what I've seen on his highlight reel (and what little I've seen from the spring thus far) I'm pleasantly surprised by his speed. For that build, the dude can move.

If Devin white chose one position ILB to be recruited at in college he'd have been #1 overall at his position nationally. He had enough height with great bulk, the fastest 40 of any lb his measurables, great hands, and lastly elite coverage skills.

Not surprised at all.

Considering we signed a 5* kid at the same position, I'd say it's at least a little surprising that he would have risen up the DC so rapidly. Not to mention all of the talent we have at the position, although I can see your point given the bodies are limited, and this kid was always a beast.

This is the reason I stopped following national recruiting sites. If this kid was strictly a LB prospect, I'm not sure how he wasn't a 5*. Others get labeled as athletes and get 5* because you know they will be a WR/DB. Same logic but it's a flip between RB/LB and the kid spends most the cycle outside the top 200 players.
