3rd down punt ever effective?

I heard that ol Cholly Mac used to call a punt on 3rd down sometimes. How was this recieved by the fan base? Was it effective? Was this a widely used strategy or was it something that just LSU would try ?

It's called a quick kick and it can be very effective if your QB can punt. I think Randle Cunningham had a nearly 70 yarder when he was on the Eagles.

It makes no sense in modern football.

As I recall, it was Paul Deitzel that used the 3rd down punt more so than Charlie McClendon. Probably had more to do with the substitution rules at the time than strategy.

This concept alone proves how players of that era shouldn't be compared to those of today.

Is it bad I screamed that at TV during last game when we couldn't seem to get a play off and punted out of our end zone?

Was just going to post this.
In that Halloween classic, Ol Miss punted on third down the entire second half. Wanted to guard against a bad snap or rush giving us good field position.
It's too bad for them, after Cannon's run put us ahead they marched straight down to field to get a first down inside the 5 yd line.

Is firing the AD effective just after he gives himself a raise?
