A good answer?

Mett was the starter who needed all the snaps he could get this year.
And that's because last year (2011), when we were blowing teams out, the HC chose to hardly give the guy a single rep in a real game. And so by the time 1/9 rolled around, you had what was effectively the next year's starter with practically zero SEC playing time. And the erstwhile starter (JJ) stinking up the field. And the former starter (JL) who won 8 games at the start of the season warming the bench for no clear reason. And this year, the same beat goes on and the problem perpetuates itself. Now picture this: next year Mett is not in the game for some reason or another. Rivers gets thrust into the crucible with no real field experience. What do you suppose will happen?
quote:

Rivers is back up, Bolden is 3rd string, Randall is 4th string, the other 2 are walk ons who will never see the field. After next season will have Rivers, Randall, and 2 freshmen.
We kind of knew all this, but thanks for the review.

One point of this thread is that Rivers is apparently the next pretender to the LSU QB throne; and so far, he's got virtually no playing time at all. In case of the unforeseen next season, is he even remotely seasoned to take over for Mett?

Last year, was Mett even remotely seasoned to take over for JJ/JL? What was missing? What is missing?

If you answered: "Playing time" you win the prize!

We never played any other QBs because we hardly ever had any big leads. When we did (in the OOC games during the first half of the season) Mett was still learning the system and needed all the snaps he could get.

And might that be because he got virtually no playing time in season 2011? Even when there were games he could have gone in and taken meaningful snaps. Only happened a very little last year.

This year, do you notice a pattern?

What back up QBs get extensive playing time during blowouts and how has that related to their performance when they take the reigns over?

Mett had the normal amount of playing time for a back up QB.

Are you 13? It wasn't long ago we had a transfer from HARVARD starting at QB because we didn't have any depth. So now 5 yrs later you figure we have too many? If you're not 13 then you must be a chick. And Rettig and Jennings are not that different aside from skin color.

Mett
Rivers
Bolden
Randall - gone most likely
Rettig
Jennings
Krags - walkon, he stays as long as pops is here
Arant- walkon, dont know if he sticks around that long

Whats the problem?

Gonna hurt losing Randall, great scout team QB and good change of pace from the other guys...but he didnt even travel with the team this year while Krags did

Agreed. 7 is just ridiculous. 4 is the right number.

Out of the 4, you obviously want one high end 4 star/5 star to be your starting QB. After that you pick up 'projects', QB's not highly rated out of high school but can/will develop into something with some coaching.

BUT, we don't have coaching. Maybe Kragthorpe does some, but I suspect Les reverses any progress Kragthorpe makes. This leads to ZERO development, if Mett goes down our season is basically over. No plan B. Plan A and B have always been to pound the ball up the middle, try and get 1 or 2 yards.

Theres gonna be at least 5 schollie kids and at least 1 walk on.

Its fine, makes it easier to get more balls to receivers in practice and such...they all provide something

Like I said...Randall was very valuable this year, as was Krags
One helped prepare for games and one was on the sideline relaying in signals for games
