2012 Season: The QB performance of Driskel and Mettenberger

The LSU 2012 schedule and QB situation is similar to, and also different from, to the 2008 season.
The similarity is that Mett and Lee were both experiencing their first SEC road games as first-time Tiger QB's against Auburn and then Florida. Auburn was less-then their typical self, and Florida was more formidable in 2008. Lee navigated the Tigers to a good road win on the plains, and folks were thinking we might have a QB for a few years. Then, he went to Ben Hill Griffin for his first time (as did I), and things went south, and that left Lee in shambles henceforth.
Fast forward to the 2012 and the next few weeks.
Mett will travel for his first SEC road test as a first-year LSU starter against a struggling Auburn team. Auburn will test us in a hostile environment, and there is probably a 20% chance (just a wild guess at the odds) the game is close late, but the smart money should be on LSU breaking away in the 3rd and 4th QTRs, if not sooner.
After Auburn, like Lee in 2008, Mett will have one good SEC environment/win (hopefully) under his belt for the trip to Gainseville against a much stronger overall team than Auburn.
In 2012, Florida will hardly be the firmly-established offensive powerhouse as they were in 2008, but they seem to finally have an identity and a good-maybe-great offense.
Driskel is building confidence and will be a formidable test for the LSU defense in early October.
As such, the performance of Driskel and Mettenberger on Oct 6th is HUGE for the whole season.
If LSU can win this game with Mett looking reasonable good, and not hurting us with big mistakes in the tough road game, he will build in confidence for the home game test against USCe, the road game at TAMU, and should be able to be undefeated for the 11/3 home test against Bama.
The good news for Tiger fans is that Chief is a vastly better defensive coach than our 2008 defensive debacle/staff, and Chief's experience at Tenn and LSU gives him long-term/contiguous "Florida experience". Chief knows BHG/Swamp as well as anyone, so Driskel and the Gators will hardly run up the score, as did Tebow and the stellar 2008 Gator offense did (rest east, I am not going to this game, so no bad omens are possible to carry over to 2012).
So, to some extent this is obvious, and to some extent this is more important than any other factor in the season.
Containing Driskel, and scheming a good game plan for Mettenberger, will be the key to building confidence that could release the Pro potential in Mettenberger, and if this fortunate turn of events unfolds, I think it will be the difference not only in the outcome of 10/6, but of the rest of the season.
I think it unfolds well. I'm sticking with my 14-0 prediction for 2012, and as Mett matures, I think this will be the best overall LSU team since the late 50's teams, and maybe even better.

Good analysis and overall post. I can't say I think the situation with teams is nearly as close though as I believe LSU is much better than the 08 team and Florida is much less proven (much less have a heisman winning QB under center.) I am also not completely sold on Florida yet. Granted they do deserve credit for going into 2 tough environments and pulling out come from behind wins but how really good were those wins? An Upstart A&M team who could very well finish the season .500 and a Tennessee team that everybody all summer except Vol fans knew couldn't be that successful with just a good QB and 3 wide receivers. So I think the verdict is still out on how good Florida is but the good news is we only have to wait 2 weeks to find out.

after watching Driskel play twice this year he looks legit. looks comfortable. Mett still doesnt look comfortable, and the plays that are being called probably dont help him. They need to unleash the Mettsiah and let him play!

I completely disagree with this, from what I've seen Mett looks very comfortable and at times too comfortable (i.e. the picks against Idaho and North Texas). The play calling has a purpose. You don't want to show your cards too early while playing these cupcake teams and give your more formidable opponents solid film to study. Mett makes good checks and reads. He doesn't shite himself when his primary is covered and has pretty good poise in the pocket. The play calling with come, relax.

much better defense.....Mett isn't a backup freshman thrown into the Auburn game after the starter got knocked silly.
Andrew Hatch was the starter that year. He got popped and Lee got thrown into the deep in of the pool with no lifesaver.
Lee's start and Mett's start aren't comparable at all.

They are comparable to areasonable extent, as delineated/stated. To say they have no similarity is an over-statement. If I (or anyone) had said they are perfect analogs, that would be silly. BUT, to say there are some contextual similarities is the point of the post, and most should see that general similarity for a first-time starter going out on the road in the SEC, irrespective of their classification (no one is saying they have the same seniority or overall experience, just some similarity).

I can't argue that the play calling hasn't been good but I think the running backs have been exceptionally good. The passing game has never performed under "pressure" nor has the passing game been leaned on to win a game yet. LSU could have ran the ball every play in those first 3 games and still won all 3.
If Mett can keep his cool. Listen to Krags on the sideline and read coverages when all hell breaks loose LSU could dominate any team in the country with that stable of backs. I don't know how all will do in the NFL but as far as all time college backfield I can't recall a single one with 5 absolute studs. They're have been a ton with 3 guys and some with two dynamic backs but 5 is just unheard of.

Good analysis. Except for the part about cheif knowing florida. It is all new coaches and different schemes im sure. But overall a really good read. +1

There are two things they have in common. It's the SEC start on the road. And it's Auburn. After that there is nothing in common between teams. Well I think Josh D was a freshmen then so there is also that.
