State has Dak and he was a one man wrecking crew last season No he wasn't. Mr. Robinson says hello.
A&M is known for their high flying offense and now have an upgrade on defense. An offense that's never flown high against LSU. Their defense would have to be better by default. No where to go but up.
Auburn has a really good QB coming in and kicked our arse last year. A fluke margin of victory when you look at the records of both teams.
Ole Miss returns 8 on their already very impressive defense. And once again, there offense will suck.
Bama is bama. Always a good team, sometimes a great team. I'm betting only a good team this season.
Arkansas has an offense that mirrors ours and has a lot of momentum coming into the year. Yes. They may double their conference win total to break even.

That 2011 defense was something special due to Mathieu. We can see that because 2012 returned almost everyone and we weren't as dominant.

Really? We lost both starting CBs (Claibourne and Mathieu) and a starting DT (Brockers) that went in the first half of the first round of the draft. You don't think losing two exceptional college corners would significantly change a defense?

You're severely over rating State, Ole Miss, and aTm. LSU wins all three, two of them in convincing fashion.

Auburn, Arkansas and Bama are toss ups.

not to mention:

Brandon Taylor (3 yr starter, drafted)
Ron Brooks (top reserve, drafted)
Ryan Baker (2 yr starter, during which time he got like 150 tackles)
Ken Adams (2 yr starter)

and Tyrann and Tahj Jones were guys we lost unexpectedly just before the season after spending all spring and summer assuming they'd start. so no, not almost everyone returned, and we were still suffering losses at weird times.

I think you can take a W against South Carolina, Florida, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss this season. Auburn, Miss State, Bama. Arky will be the games that decide if we are a playoff team

The OP just phrased it strangely. No offense to the OP though.

Very possible.....

Highly doubtful... LF sure...But the rest you have zero idea that this will happen... The NFL doesn't work the way it used to.....1st round RBS are not as frequent as they used to be....

Taylor, Brooks and Adams were all 3rd Round Picks, and Mathieu ultimately was as well (his talent dictated much, much higher).

Well, the good news is that by week 3 we'll know what type of year it will be.

I think you need to remember the outlook for 2011 BEFORE the season started.

Auburn was coming off a national championship season.
Alabama was Alabama and everyone knew they were stacked.
Arkansas looked primed for a run after their great 2010 season.
Florida was giddy for just hiring Muschamp and were expecting great things from their defense.
Miss. St. was coming off a 9-win season and bowl route of Michigan. And we had them in Starkville in 2011.
Oregon was coming off a FG loss in the title game. West Virginia was coming off a 9-win season and had just hired Dana Holgorson. And we played them in Morgantown.
ETA: Forgot to mention Tennessee. While they weren't exactly on fire, we had just needed a miracle (and I really mean a miracle, or at least a defensive substitution) to beat them at home in 2010, AND I think we had won one or two games in Knoxville EVER before 2011.
Oh, and right before the Oregon game, we had just gone through about the worst two to three week period I can ever remember the program ever going through, with Speedy's, Chris Faulk going down for the season, Kragthorpe getting diagnosed, Willie Lyles and probation being levied for the Akiem Hicks deal.

What exactly were people thinking we were going to do then? I guess we could chalk up a win against Ole Miss (although they gave us everything we could handle at home in 2010) and Kentucky and the two cupcakes, but every other game was losable at least without hindsight.

I'm talking about the defensive backfield. White, with a good season, may go in the first round. Mills was right on the borderline last year between 1st and 2nd, in NFL projections. Jamal Adams, if he stays healthy, is going to be special. Tolliver hasn't played yet....but from everything we have heard about him.....that is certainly a possibility down the road.....and there are some other very highly talented players that could work their way up as well...and are certainly future NFL draftees.

after Auburn last year, 90% of this board was saying we would go 0-8 or 1-7 at best, and wouldn't be bowl eligible.....literally about 90%. So, no, we won't know anything for sure.

On paper we have the least amount of question marks compared to the rest of the sec, but for some reason out QB play is much more of a question mark than others.

because QB play has kept LSU unbalanced. secondaries that are weak are not challenged enough. leaning on the run game hinders the passing game.

7-5/3-5. I'll believe in a better record than this as soon as I see substantially better play from the QB spot. For Christ's sake we ranked 15th or 16th in the SEC from that position in 2014. Just climbing to the 8-spot--middle of the pack--would be an enormous improvement.

So you really think we were only good in 2011 because of Mathieu?

That defense was loaded tm7 wasn't even the best defender on that team. He wasn't even the best corner, he was the best defensive play maker but MO Claiborne I would also say Eric tied was better too.

That was maybe the greatest defense LSU has ever and will ever put on the field.

The west is wide open this year every team has, weakness And strengths.

LSU may have the best offensive line in the SEC this year. It's easy to ignore the importance of the offensive line, but you can win games by pounding it down people's throated, 2011 is an example of that. Our D should get better.

Everyone looks at our QB situation and says lsu will be bad can't trust the offense, but with the talent we have on the line, at running back and wide receiver, we don't need that much success from our QB, just don't turn the ball over make a few passes and hand it off to a solid running back. If the O-Line becomes what it we are making it out to be, we should be a good running team. Off Harris or Jennings can complete up to you P passes a game, our offense may surprise people. Sure we won't light up the scoreboard like everyone else can in the SEC, but if our defense plays well we don't need to.

I see 8-10 wins this season maybe 11 if we turn things on quick. Note: 2016 is going to be a monster year for us, I'm excited for this year but be excited for the future.
