I've heard that very phrase before... it is used

You can pitch shutout innings but if you don't go a complete game, it isn't a shutout for that pitcher, it is a team shutout.

you can throw shut out innings and be relieved

you can throw a complete game while allowing runs

you can only combine complete game shut out when 1 pitcher goes 9 innings and gives up no runs

ETA: and in the statistics category there is a line for complete games which aren't shut outs... so it must be differentiated

How many pitches did Nola throw?
Why was Jones out the lineup?

True. But that isn't a shutout.

quote:

No pitcher shall be credited with pitching a shutout unless he pitches the complete game, or unless he enters the game with none out before the opposing team has scored in the first inning, puts out the side without a run scoring and pitches the rest of the game without allowing a run. When two or more pitchers combine to pitch a shutout, the league statistician shall make a notation to that effect in the league's official pitching records.

right... the focus is on complete games... you can throw a complete game w/o a shut out... so saying complete game shut out is being specific

CG is complete game

SHO is individual shutout (pitcher is also credited with CG)

CBO is a combined shutout.

why exactly are we arguing this?

I thought I was explaining that you can't pitch a Shutout unless you go a complete game.

I was confused. Sorry.

Texas A&M just hit a grand slam to go up 5-3 on Arkansas in Fayetville

we're missing the obvious question here... were there any errors involved that would make these 4 runs unearned?

Aaron Nola is the first LSU pitcher to throw a complete game shutout in an SEC game since Kevin Gausman did it May 13, 2011 vs. Tennessee.
