Latz’s status

Freshman lefty Jake Latz might not get the chance to pitch this season, but nothing is certain yet, Mainieri said.

Latz, who has not thrown in a game this year, is about four weeks into a six-week throwing program while recovering from a stress reaction in his throwing elbow he suffered during preseason practice.

The highly touted rookie from Illinois is having trouble completely shaking a lingering injury, Mainieri said. The injury has flared up on him recently.

Even if all went well, Latz was not expected to be game-ready until May.

Latz, once a candidate for a weekend starting spot, won’t redshirt, something given to players who plan to be in school five years.

“He turned down a $1 million signing bonus so the chance of him being here for five years is probably nil,” Mainieri said last week.

In reality, if he gets it now, he could be ready in February. 12 months isn't the norm anymore for kids who are monitored closely... It would still take time even once he's on the mound, but he would likely be cleared by the start of the season most likely...

I mean, yeah, he's likely gone after his 3rd year if he pitches like he's capable of, but why not still redshirt him if he won't pitch this season?

It's not like it hurts anything to do it.

It's basically an auto-redshirt if he doesn't play. The only thing they would have to do is if they wanted a medical so he could get a fifth year. Which is possible if we're being realistic given how unpredictable this stuff can be. I would apply for it if I were LSU.

That's my question as well. Is there any downside to him redshirting?

If he pitches really well and leaves as a draft eligible redshirt sophomore, are we penalized in any way?

Why would you rush him back in Feb if he has the surgery now? It has taken Matt Harvey a year and a half to come back and he is on a 90 pitch count all through April. Jose Fernandez is not scheduled to come back until July or August and he will be on a even stricter pitch count...these are mlb pitchers. You asking a kid who has never thrown a pitch in a college game to come back in 10 months....makes zero sense and its not going to happen. Its unrealistic and btw Ell...I disagree with your assessment on Godfrey. Kid is a freshman and he is pitching a full college season for the first time...Kid is going to wear down and is showing signs of wearing down. Time to plug in Bain on Sundays and let Godfrey be your middle relief the rest of the year. He will be very valuable in that role. Heck, let Bain start on Sundays and have Godfrey relieve for him.

Each kid is different Broski, but I would not be surprised to see him wear down some. But Lange has such filthy stuff, his fatigue would not be as noticeable as Godfrey.

That's not how it works, champ.

I'm not talking about rushing him back or making him throw 8 innings per game out of the gate. We won't have to do that you know. We bring back all of our starters next year (unless they transfer). 10 months and he's cleared. That's how TJs work now... Take me for example.

You think these guys haven't been cleared to throw? It takes them that long to get back to throwing like they were prior... accuracy, strength, ready to take on a full mlb season, etc. You are not comparing apples to apples.

We should sit Lange now then, right?

I agree. But the premise (read: title) of this thread is dumb.

No. He's a starter, will be a starter, and needs to overcome his issues in that role IMO.

To put it differently, Lange will wear down. Just hope he can still shut them down.

Not necessarily the case. Is it more likely that he does than say Poche? sure, but just because they are freshmen doesn't mean they'll automatically become a noodle arm the second the high school season ends.

And for what it's worth, I don't think Godfrey is wearing down, he's a guy that is very fiery and doesn't have confidence on the mound right now, that's a dangerous combination. When he's right, he is a better option than Bain in the rotation.

Hunch...but I am not trying to be a douche like that idiot in the other thread. I am just worried about the pitching.

That's fair. And most fans probably are. Because we pay attention so closely to our team. Godfrey's problems aren't that he's wearing down. It's mental with him. This is probably the first time he's ever faced adversity like this. He's used to being THE ace... dominating hitters and them swinging at just about anything. It's not completely untypical for most freshman... he just has great stuff if he can control himself.

And back to Latz. I don't know if he needs TJ or not. From what I've heard, this isn't that type of issue. It's a building of fluid due to microtears. I don't know details beyond that though... it could be muscular tears or ligament tears. Both are considered "normal" but the irritation is concerning. Surgery may not even be a viable solution for it.

Our pitching is much deeper than many SEC teams and other top 15 teams for that matter.
