Genuine question (don't crucify if it's obvious)

Why do we have so many DL commits?

We currently have 5 committed and appear to be close to landing 3 more (Lawrence, Manual, Gary). Do we need 8 DL commits?

Is there 2-3 that could be used at a different position (FB) or commit to another school?

We have 12 DLinemen on the roster now. We don't lose any (unless LaCouture goes pro which I don't think he does b/c he's a team leader & appears to bring the best out of those around him - haven't seen Neal rated high for potential draft picks)

Thanks for the feedback!

1) Depth
2) Behind QB and Oline, Dline is the hardest position to project

Because d linemen take a year or two to get physically ready to play college football from high school. You can't ask 18-19 yr old boys to line up against 22-23 yr old grown men who have been weight training in college programs for 3-4 years. It's rarely done and we need to restock for the future. Coach o is a coach who like to be able to rotate guys in and out and have everyone fresh for the 4th quarter. Imagine when we do have that kind of depth in our dline and none of our big guys are wearing out all game. We are going to be the best defense in the country. That's why.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I hadn't considered that DLine is the hardest to project. AND those positions take time through strength training program.

Mix both of those & Coach O's style. The odds of having all 8 (potentially) actually make it on campus & perform. I see your point.

Thanks!

We have 4 DL currently committed

Caleb Roddy - DE
Andre Anthony - DE
Glen Logan - DE/DT
Ed Alexander - DT
Rahssan Thornton is a LB commit

We aren't going to turn away guys like Gary, Lawrence and Manuel, so if they want in, you take them. It's that simple...but our depth at DT is pretty horrific going forward, which is why we're wanting to take several DTs.

We have 4 guys who can play DT this year (Quentin Thomas is a senior and cant even get on the field). Next year we will have 1 senior and 3 juniors at DT, so we really need to take as many DTs as we can this year. Godchaux isnt sticking around for a senior season, so I'd say 4 DTs in this class is more than fair. Keep in mind we lost 2 DTs before this season ever started in Trey L and Travonte V.

At DE we are simply put way too thin. When Bower was out we had to play Key and Neal way too much. shite, Neal has still been playing every snap of every game recently. Clark looks like he might not make it, I. Washington has been injured most of this year. I think adding 3 DEs or so is a smart idea. Roddy and Anthony are already in and Logan and Gary can also shade out to DE if needed.

It's a good problem to have. Great crop of top DTs in state this year plus many elite DL giving us a serious look. I can't wait to see how we finish this class. It could easily be one for the history books.

I wonder what he did to piss off coach O? Clark played a good number of snaps under Brick, but that's not saying much.

Clark has played in 3 of the 6 games this year but hasn't registered a single stat. Not sure what's going on with him but he's way way behind everyone else at DE (except M.J. Patterson who might be falling into the same category as Clark).

Our DL depth is nonexistent. We have one viable backup at DE, and only two at DT. That's pitiful. Bricks lazy arse left us in a horrid spot at DL. We need to take 9 or 10 d-lineman. Also we only have 4, maybe 3 DL committed right now. Fowler and Thornton will be linebackers at LSU. Anthony could play LB as well.

Gilmore and Herron are listed as sophomores because they redshirted, but they were in the same freshman class as Neal and LaCouture. So, they'll be fourth-year players next season and if they do well, could leave for the NFL. That would mean all four of this season's top DTs could be gone after next year...and there are no replacements on the current roster. So, the team needs at least three, preferably four, new tackles.

Anthony will be an end b/c of depth. You're right though. Haley left us w/o many pass rushers.

I get what you're saying, but if Gilmore and Herron leave after next year it's not because they're declaring for the draft. They are backups and see limited snaps as is, and will see even more limited snaps next year with all the big time DL talent we are bringing in (imagine Manuel, Alexander, Lawrence & Logan all coming in competing).

Could be, but they seem to be getting more and more playing time. If they live up to their promise out of high school, another season could get them as high up the draft board as they'll get so they might well decide to try to jump. And if they stay and continue to progress, it might be hard for a freshman to pass them up. As was said above, it takes time for a kid out of high school to get in shape and learn enough to go against grown men. Godchaux started last year but he's going to the NFL and didn't have much competition. I hope the new ones are good enough to take some jobs away, but I wouldn't count on it. If I were Orgeron, I would be planning to play the current four next year while the young'uns learn...unless they are really great enough to push some older guys aside.
