If one of them chooses LSU, does it push the other to commit elsewhere?

Not necessarily. Having other high quality players on the line reduces the chances they will be double teamed.

We are also VERY thin on the DL - we NEED to bring in a lot of players. They all can and will play as FR

I would say no, since DT/DE/LB are big needs. I know we have a starting lineup, but with players like that they will find a way to play them together or rotate them out and keep them fresh.

In the long run it is best for both player and team to not get used up in College. LSU has done more than awesome making sure players are ready for the NFL and not broken enough to possibly be a injured player in their NFL career.

Last time I checked, there are typically two defensive tackles in a front seven. Plus, LSU has been experimenting with some five-man fronts which would likely utilize an additional defensive tackle.

Gary has the athleticism to operate as a 3-technique end, and like some other posters said we are pretty thin at DT.

Here are our six scholarship defensive tackles on roster:
Johnson Sr
Herron So
Thomas Sr
Gilmore So
LaCouture Jr
Godchaux So

Right away you lose two players to graduation. That leaves us with only four tackles on roster. Considering that Orgeron likes to rotate at least eight defensive lineman during the course of a game, four tackles will get substantial playing time each and every game.

Godchaux is a lock to start, as is LaCouture if he has truly broken through like reports suggest. However, Gilmore and Herron are currently unproven commodities. Therefore, it stands to reason that two elite defensive tackles could easily garner playing time as true freshman.

Didn't Lewis Neal spend some time at tackle? Not really relevant to your point I admit because I'm pretty sure he's been "officially" put back at DE. Just curious if I'm remembering correctly.

On the OP's question: I think that sometimes SOME recruits want to be THE guy coming in a his position. Those are probably more rare than we fans/recruitniks assume. We also like to use the "scared of competition" thing as both self-healing and to mess with the other team's fans here. Don't believe it most of the time.

An overall assessment of early playing time is what most recruits will look at along with how his position is utilized. These two, being "the guy" is not a problem. It just may be an advantage; like others have stated, the smart one's see the benefit of having a strong unit with double-teams and such. Mingo and Sonic were prime examples. Which side you going to send the RB, TE, or double to. Works the same on the interior.

He did, but I think Orgeron likes his size and athleticism on the perimeter. I believe they are trying to get back to the Saban and Pelini defensive ends that played between 270-290, similar to what Coach O had at USC.

2 top players in the country I wouldn't be surprised if they wait until the All American games or NSD. Both have made visits all over the country and are yet to pop so I doubt they do it during a visit. The only way I see them speeding up is if LSU tells them jump on or get left behind but I don't see them telling 2 top 10 prospects that.

2015 - Tennessee brought in Mckenzie and Tuttle, both top 9 DTs

2014 - Florida brought in Willis and Holley, both top 4 DTs. Florida State brought in Nnadi and Christmas, both top 9 DTs.

2013 - TAMU brought in Manning and Golden, both top 8 DTs.

2012 - FSU brought in Edwards and Golden, both top 3 DTs

2011 - Oklahoma brought in Wade and Phillips, both top 10 DTs

While what we are trying to do would be crazy (3 of the top 6 as of right now), there is still a possibility considering how young we are. After this season, we'll only have four DTs. Our starters will be a senior and a 3rd year starting JR.

Ed O will already want Gary to move around on the line so he'll get a lot of early playing time as well as Lawrence and Alexander as rotational players.

Hell, given the way early departures have ravaged LSU, LaCouture breaking out and declaring early is a legitimate possibility.

Accidentally down voted post above me, it was a great post.
