I saw that a player from Denham Springs committed to Nicholls State despite having offers from Brown and Columbia. His GPA and ACT scores were listed (I believe 3.8 and 29) and those are exactly in line with what Ivy League schools would want in a football player.

This was one of the most mind-boggling decisions I have ever seen. I can't even begin to think why anyone would prefer Nicholls (or for that matter, any school in the state besides LSU) for football. Grades are clearly not an issue, and before anyone says "Ivy league doesn't give scholarships for athletics", that is only true in the most literal sense. It's always amazing how the "need-based" packages for desired athletes is nearly identical to what an athletic scholarship would be.

So would any of you make the same decision? Or for La Tech, ULL, ULM, Tulane, etc?

A "free" Ivy League education vs. In State school?

Not even close.

He chose Harvard on the Bayou instead of the genuine article.

Maybe he really likes the food.

My academic performance in college woud dictate that I would be offered no more than weekend visit to an Ivy League school. But if I felt like I could do the work, it would be tough to turn down.

If that idiot is staying in state to go to Nicholls for a girl and giving up the opportunity for an Ivy League education, I might cry.

yeah my HS g/f turned down a softball scholly to Ole Miss for a private school. She still got a scholly, but it was called something other than an "athletic" scholly.

as for the player in question, I guess he truly didn't want to leave home

29 would be more than enough. Hell, a 29 might be enough for a lacrosse/field hockey type athlete, if they were a top 100 national recruit.

I'd say that a 27 would do the trick for a typical recruit, and for someone really coveted, they might go down to 24 or 25.

I'd go to the Ivy League, beast against future CEOs and hedge fund managers, possibly look a lot better than I really am in the process, network like a motherfricker and get my degree.

Thinking about it further, the Ivys are SAT schools. Perhaps he bombed his SAT?

You're not considering what the girls look like at Brown.

I think a 28 would be barely enough for a recruited Ivy athlete. No way a 25 would make the cut.

There's an old saying I try to live by: "To each his own."

I'm sure the young man has his reasons which is all that matters. Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships, and perhaps he would still have a significant financial hurdle in order to attend. He may want to teach or coach, in which an Ivy education offers no significant advantage as far as earning power. He may not want to leave the state. Or, he may simply like Nicholls State and feels comfortable going to school there.

26 or 27 makes the cut (if you are important enough to them). The Ivy League schools have what is called "bands" so they have a little freedom in bringing a couple of kids each year that aren't quite on the same level as others. I do know this, it is quite a shock for a kid going from LA to an Ivy League school from both an academic and a social perspective.

I think you are greatly under-estimating how far from the median SAT most recruited athletes are at elite schools.

Here is an SAT/ACT conversion chart LINK

Anyone who is expected to be a starter by the coaches will get in with a 1200ish score if he has good grades and no conduct issues. A huge difference maker like Marcellus Wiley can get in with way, way less. My 9th grade history coach personally recruited him to Columbia. At the time he was really upset with some comments Wiley had made to SI and told us he got him into the school with a 3 digit SAT score (2 part).

Biggest question is if he was getting a full ride offer or not. Even if the "needs based package" cover 80% of the costs, 20% of those schools may be too much for many.

Now if he was offered a full ride from these Ivy League schools & he turned it down for Nichols State, then I may have to question his test score & GPA.

Just to add a little more, it is not strictly based on ACT/SAT score. They calcute a AI ranking that also weighs GPA & Class rank (not sure about Class Rank - they used that in the past, but not sure if they do any longer).
