I know he never played at LSU. Op asked about the top 10 basketball recruits. The NCAA wouldn't allow him to play.

9) Lester Earl
10) Naz Reid

HM: Chris Jackson, Stromile Swift, Jerry Reynolds

Thou art Rudy and upon this rock I will build this program.

Rudy Macklin was the single most important recruit in LSU basketball history. When he signed a plethora of highly touted recruits followed for several years: Cook, Sims, Martin, Scales, Carter, Mitchell, the Green boys Tree and Al. Their success paved the way for 15 years of a fantastic climb to the top. No Macklin and it is doubtful this success occurs and the program would not have attracted the subsequent high profile recruits.

Wow, I consider myself all over LSU fb and hoops since 1978. I remember sabonis, horford, and all the rest, but not Tom Curry. I guess we do learn something new most days!

Tom Curry followed former LSU assistant and Redemptorist coach Rick Huckaby to Marshall University.

John "Hot PLate" Williams was a HUGE hype. Probably belongs in the top 5.

All the top 10 were in the the top 10 the year they came out of high school.
1. Pete Maravich
2. Shaquille O'Neal
3. Ben Simmons
4. Randy Livingston
5. Chris Jackson
6. John Williams
7. Tom Curry
8. Fess Irvin
9. Stanley Roberts
10. Tito Horford

Edited to move John Williams up, he finished number 2 in the nation to Danny Manning his sr. year.

Once you get to here your looking at top 11-30
11. Durand Macklin
12. Lester Earl

Jerry Reynolds was ranked around 47-49 coming out of High school.

Great post - thanks for listing and justifying (not just downvoting)...and I do remember Tom Curry.

Was Shaq the no doubt #1 high school senior by all services like Simmons was?

Shaq was moved to number 1 after the McDonald's All Star game by most everyone.

He was already number 2 on some.

If I remember correct Bob had him #1 already before the game.

Bob's service was the best bb recruiting mag from late 78 until the mid to late 90's.

How many of that list were package deals? Sign their coach and the star player together. Pete, Rudy, HC, Curry...did I miss any?

Livingston definitely #1. He was rated the #1 player in his class basically by the time he was 14 years old. No clue on Maravich, but I guess he was huge since we hired his dad to be our head coach just to get him, right? Shaq was being called a future all time great by the end of his senior year, so I'd say him and Pete are tied for #2 with Ben Simmons. Chris Jackson was really hyped, so he's after those guys.

Stanley Roberts' high school coach, Jim Childers, ended up coaching at LSU.

Randy is definitely the all time hyped LSU recruit out of high school. I don't want to throw the board into chaos again by mentioning what I imagined hearing coach k say about him on at least 2 occasions on his xm radio show either!

Ben Simmons hands down over Randy Livingston. Randy was great in his own right, but he was no Ben Simmons. Please stop with the Coach K saying Randy was the best he's ever seen. It's comical.
