Last year was painful for all of us - watching Collins jilt us on national TV, followed by Davis dumping us on NSD. Combined with Deval, that was arguably the 3 highest-rated recruits in the state last year.

So, we would obviously want to prevent that from happening again - at any cost. But which of the two following scenarios would you prefer:

Scenario #1:
-------------
Nkemdiche --> LSU
Sealy-Jones ---> LSU (de-commits from Texas)
Hargeaves ---> LSU

Tim Williams ---> Texas Longhorns
John Diarse ---> Alabama (de-commits from LSU)
Jeryl Brazil ---> Alabama (de-commits from LSU)

Scenario #2:
-------------
Nkemdiche ---> Bama
Sealy-Jones ---> Texas
Hargeaves ---> Florida

Williams ---> LSU
Diarse ---> LSU
Brazil ---> LSU

This "fence" you speak of is terrible overrated.

If you live and die by this "fence" and think it's "down," then go back and check out the 2011 class.

No more scenarios, get the best players that WANT to play for LSU.

Why would Tim Williams go to Texas? it's either LSU or Bama. slightly behind those 2 are the U and USC

I refuse to respond to your question since I don't necessarily agree with your premise, i.e., the choices shown.

LA is quickly becoming a "little FL" w.r.t. recruiting. There will be year-by-year more SEC quality talent than we can sign, e.g., Otha Peters. Hence, it offers more and more in-roads into LA from those outside.

The big thing is that we cherry pick the elites in LA. Obviously, that didn't happen in '12 with "defections" you've noted.

The "fence" argument can go both ways. Yes, it is best to keep the top in-state talent in-state but not all local kids want to remain local and that may not have to do with the school. I wanted to leave my home-state as soon a I graduated HS and I did so. LSU is also guilty of letting go some very sought-after talent from LA who wanted an LSU scholarship badly, but instead went after a prospect from another state who was slightly better. GA loses their top state prospects to OOS schools all of the time and yet UGA's roster is always loaded and their signing classes always finish somewhere around the top 5. Florida has 3 big-time programs, yet they lost their best CB prospect to LSU. Yeah PP was a once-in-a-decade phenomenon and none of the big three should've allowed him to escape state borders.

Why because some primadonna wanted to have his moment in the spotlight because he had been sold by Saban and will eventually get "processed"? I really didnt find it to be that big a deal, we filled lots of needs with really good players and landed some big time guys from right here at home.

In lieu of Collins, Davis, Devall we'll be fine.

But these were top shelf players that we offered (Devall?) and they all elected to play elsewhere. We don't need to (nor can we) sign all the SEC caliber talent in LA but we do need to sign the best.

Again. Meh.

Devall was a 3-4 OLB who wouldnt have been successful here. Collins was a "Luther Davis Type" who had more talent. Davis was the to me that hurt, he played it out like a child and he was really the only one I think hurt us.

It's a damn hypothetical people, just play along. Obviously in the real world it's not an either-or with all those guys.

I would prefer Williams-Diarse-Brazil (Scenario #2). Seals-Jones is really more comparable to DeSean Smith, whom I think we get anyway. Brazil's upside is right up there with Hargreaves, plus he is more likely to contribute in the return game (and I unconditionally trust our in-state DB evaluations). Nkemdiche is the only one who is appreciably better than his in-state counterpart on the list, but Williams still has blue chip potential and I would hate to not get a great recruit who literally attends high school on the LSU campus.

This reeks of sour grapes.

Not coincidentally, UGA's results on the field never measure up to their signing classes on paper. There's also a similar reason that the Big 3 in Florida are all in a down cycle right now.

Thanks Gravitiger. I really didn't expect the concept to be so difficult for other folks to grasp. I would take Scenario #1, but I understand your opinion, as well.

OK, I'll reverse course and play the game: I would go with option #2, get all the in-state guys. IMO, there is more long run payoff by keeping the best of our talent so that we have to rely less on OOS personnel year-in, year-out.

Collins was a "Luther Davis Type" who had more talent.

I never saw LC play and he may prove to be a bust. But at this juncture, it appears that he was much, much more than a "Luther Davis type with more talent." Didn't he finish runner-up in the LA 100m sprint and light-it up at one of the Nike camps? And I think Chris Carrier was his HS coach at Dutchtown so he'll come out of HS as ready for CFB as anyone could hope for.

I won't downplay this loss nor dwell on it. We'll be fine (in the short term. It's if there are successive years of losing our top in-state talent that it becomes a concern).

Poorly informed, reactionary LSU fans are the only people who think the fence ever went down.

A Florida fan on the SEC Recruiting Board two days ago:
quote:

quote:

Geez Florida is loaded with talent
.

Indeed. Still have to divide that by 3 major in-state schools, add in UG, LSU, Bama, Auburn, Clemson, OSU, MI and others that recruit top kids from here.

We don't have the lock that LSU has on their state. If we did, we'd be moved to the NFL.

Yea LSU lost some really good in-state players but they also signed 15 Louisiana guys. I hate losing good guys as bad as anyone else but it's going to happen. I hate losing them to Bama but some kids believe the hype.

The quote I linked is in a thread about SEC area states producing Rivals top 250 players from 2010-2013. Louisiana produced 39 and Alabama produced 29. Alabama has has to recruit harder OOS because they are splitting their 29 in-state guys with Auburn & Florida State.

Bama can't get enough in-state players to fill their roster. Hell, they can't get enough in-state players to have a majority of Alabama players on their team. Their roster right now has fewer Alabama players than OOS players. Al.com

quote:

This spring however, for the first time since Saban's arrival, players from outside the state of Alabama outnumber in-state players on the Tide roster.

LSU has some great OOS players on the team but it's still a mostly Louisiana based team. We need both sets of players. Our staff is great at identifying underrated players in Louisiana and OOS. We need many of both. THE SKY IS NOT FALLING.

ETA: You might get more responses about whether posters would rather sign great in-state or OOS kids if you change your subject to something to do with that. I didn't read all of your OP until I was half way through with my post. I just saw a negatiger saying the fence was down, the fence is down, the fence is down, OH, Nos!

Last year was the first year That Saban got someone out of LA that was really good. He took two great recruits. That bothers me as Miles has locked up the state mostly until last year.
