I tried this on the MSB but it went nowhere, so I will give it a try here.

Has anyone/or child competed at the Nike combine? How did it go, would you recommend it?

My son is a freshman and going to one next month. Just looking for some insight and advice.

I would highly recommend the Nike SPARQ. Since he's just a freshman, it will help you gauge his overall athletic ability. You'll also be able to track his progress at the SPARQ's as he gets older.

That is what I am thinking as well.....my only concern is the electronic time in the 40.

I did this in high school. The hardest thing for the younger guys was the medicine ball toss (on knees with a 20 pound ball in your hands and pretty much shot put it), and not slipping/wasting motion whirlybirding on the 10 and 20 yard shuttles.

A good 40 time is similar to a good 100..... its all about the start. Have him work his starts with a track guy

I did it in highschool (graduated in 2009). I don't think it was as many tests as it is now, but it helped me gauge where I stood next to others in the country. The gave average scores for prior year signees at the different collegiate levels, was nice to know where I ranked next to them.

he is running track right now so that should help but I agree the start is the key.

i am hoping worst case scenario he scores in the high 50's and best case low 60's.

I would only recommend participating if you have trained for each category in the event (40, shuttle, vertical, power ball). Having a bad showing is something that will follow you. Adversely, if you're boy has been preparing for SPARQ's scoring system and he is confident in a good showing then it's a very good event to attend.

5'9" 155 right now. He should be close to 6ft and 175lbs as a senior.

The only thing he hasn't really trained for is the power ball toss, but I have ordered one. Last week in football class he ran 4.87(hand) 40, 4.2 shuttle and his vertical is 30.5.

A bad showing does concern me, but if he does the combine every year and gets better it will have no bearing at all.

A 59-69 rating is great for a kid his size. The Shuttle, power ball and the vertical should be your main focus. With his weight being 155 it will kinda hurt his peak power totals. A 59-69 should make you a proud father!

My son (8th grader) did two here in Texas last summer. It was a good experience but we will not be doing another one until his Jr/Sr year. Too much these days combine scores are used to evaluate players. Even though measureables are good to gauge, it isn't the most important. Rivals also has regional combines and my son is doing one middle of March in Austin. They have more events (6) that they test in so going to give it a try. Your son will love the experience and I wish him luck! Don't get caught up too much on his overall score this young. We are really concentrating now on position specific camps where he can really learn the position he plays. In the end, what matters the most is how he performs on the field.

After looking at those numbers, I don't think there is anyway my son scores 59.88 next month but that is why we are going.....to see how he stacks up.

I'm surprised they don't use broad jump. It is an excellent indicator of overall athleticism imo.

Rivals combine does use the broad jump.
