Gathers plays on a team that has one other decent big man and by decent I mean 200 lbs unathletic Matt Moss who was getting destroyed in the showcase (saw it first hand). He gets 15 rebound because nobody else can in AAU for them. And he dunks. He has not shot and is a fat 3 who is best when playing the 5.

A team unable to shoot the ball winning 25 games is a turn around. Playing the best defense in the SEC when our previous coach didn't know what defense was is a quick turn around. A top 7 recruiting class is a quick turn around. That was my point...you can tell we are such a better coached and fundamentally sound team under Grant. And yes, this should be a great year for us. The future is extremely bright.

A lot of people who do this for a living seem to strongly disagree with you.

St Johns' Steve Lavin shows he can recruit w/the best. Fans should b excited about Gathers; kid is a beast on the boards

Ricardo Gathers to St Johns. That's big. Big pickup. One of nations elite rebounders.

@PaulBiancardi Wow, great pull for Lavin! Gathers rebounds over, around and his specialty through opponents! Will bring toughness!

I know it looks and may be bad for TJ to not get Gathers, but really, if you are Gathers, wouldn't you rather go to New York City to try and showcase your talent.

I mean, if my goal is to get to the NBA, going to New York City to play for Steve Lavin is definitely nothing to sneeze at.

Steve Lavin is definitely an ESPN favorite (being a commentator there helped him immensely).

Now, if LSU was at the level of Kentucky and we lost Gathers, that would be bad, real bad. But we all know that for the last two years we have been cellar dwellers in the SEC.

I love LSU basketball and I hope and pray this season is the beginning of a great run. But I have no stake in that belief. Gather's does. That's why I can shake off losing him...at least in my mind. My heart, well, losing him sucks.

but I believe the only guy from that class that Duke has offered is Theo Pinson. And they evaluated some point guards but Victor wasn't one of them

You need to check again with your source. Victor has offers on the table from a lot of schools. The ones I know of that's worth mentioning are Oklahoma State, Baylor, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Georgetown, North Carolina, and Duke. Texas, North Carolina, and Duke just offered him recently so if you're looking at Rivals or any other recruiting service they might not have it updated.

Just looked up Victor, and he is a forward and in the top 20 on ESPN's list. No one else seems to be ranking guys that young, yet, but he seems to be the Gathers/Bridgewater for 2014.

See the thing between Gathers and Victor is that Victor has an offensive game and can handle the ball. Gathers doesn't, he contributes off of pure athleticism and if you've actually paid attention to Gathers recruitment throughout his young career his stock has fallen because of his ineptness on the offensive end.

I'm not trying to toot his horn, but Victor will be a beast by the time his junior year roll around because he is displaying skills on both sides of the ball to be a complete elite player. Players like that are special and that's why you see him ranked on ESPN's top 20 list and he's been on everyone's "player to watch" list. If Victor continues his progression, he will be a Top 5 player.

If you're local and if you haven't seen St. Aug play, you are certainly missing out on seeing good talent because they are loaded with D1 talent.

furthermore i posted that before St. Johns was even really in the hunt. But from what ive heard you cant really blame Trent Johnson as he has drooled all over this guy from day 1 and especially this summer, just couldnt seal the deal i guess.

Uhhh he was visiting St. John's the day after you said he was going to LSU.... book it. So they must have been in the hunt before you posted that he was going to St. John's a month later.

From what i was told St. Johns wasnt really an option for him until he visited there, and they threw the Madison Square Garden thing out there and he ate it up. When i say in the hunt i was referring to him not caring about them not vice versa.

no one is saying anything bad about Gathers

but a majority of Tiger fans have lost all belief in TJ and I am now one of them.

Wish Ricardo the best of luck, I want all LA kids to be successful wherever they go but IMO it's a horrible sign when you can't keep the best LA talent in three years in state

IMO, St. Johns HC Steve Lavin:

..got massive ego and strong Dbag tendencies...

WHY go to St. Johns
(Ricardo maybe scored few hot NYC chicks on recruiting visit ??)

Plenty of good coaches are like that, either way I don't think you can determine that without knowing him.

This is kind of what I find a little confusing. While NYC is the big city spotlight, St. John's is a minnow in that city. Going around NYC and telling chicks you go play for St. John's carries less sway than that type of thing would in every other town in America. If he wanted the Big East spotlight UCONN would make more sense, at least if he had a legit offer there like Scout shows.

True...

maybe Lavin convinced him its fun to play lots of games in Madison Square Garden even with few fans in seats (AKA "da Ga-den")

They are riding a strong wave from Lavin's surprising first season (which wasn't surprising when you notice that they played the 2009-10 Duke squad as tough as anyone and retained 8 or 9 seniors last year), and the gigantic 2011 recruiting class (which was necessary from the 8 or 9 seniors who graduated and/or fulfilled their eligibility).

However, Lavin was able to get a truly national collection of kids last year, and that may have appealed to Gathers. For the past few months, it definitely seemed like his favorite school.

My opinion is he needs to have a good season this year to keep his job. Signing or not signing Gathers shouldn't change that.

I don't think he needed to have a great season if he was going to get Gathers because at least there was hope with a big time recruit coming in. Now, he needs to have a great season in my opinion because there isn't a lot of hope on the horizon.

Ricardo who? I am over it, just like with Augustin, Duhon, Monroe and the rest of them, if they don't want to be part of LSU(which I can't really blame any of them, all went to top flight schools), then I say, goodbye!

FWIW, I don't think Rico is much more highly rated, by Rivals anyway, than O'Bryant was. Maybe 8-10 spots. If Trent could even bring in a class full of Turner's and Johnny O's every year we'd be a hell of a lot better. I hope Isaac is a player. I heard he does really well in the pick up games over the summer. Same with Hickey. Someone who was at those practices told me don't be surprised if we see:

Hickey
Turner
Isaac
Hamilton
O'Bryant

but most likely will start out like:

Hickey
Turner
Derenbecker
Warren
Hamilton

didn't those same people who do it for living have Morgan a five star can't miss prospect? he turned out well.

not saying gathers isn't good. i don't know. Just pointing out that if you are depending these people to tell you who can play and who can't, they aren't alway right.
