Been a discussion at the watering hole for some time, but have not seen the two items of content in a single post, but sorry if Germans.

1. True cost of attendance stipend - not aware of a NCAA limitation - sure there are some guidelines, at least I hope there are some guidelines, but simply based on cost of living, the differences could be be pretty large between BR & NE/west coast, etc. Lot of last year's class were not even aware. As hard as we are recruiting out of state, could be a factor with a youngster that has no idea what cost of living is.

2. FAA & Letter of Intent - we are the first to feal the effects of this one. How a University can be locked in to a recruit & he is free to do what he wants is beyond logic.

I admit the NCAA is making progress; a kid can now have peanut butter on his bagel.

I don't think the stipend will differentiate that much. The stipend shouldn't cover room/board and most meals. It will only cover the extras and that doesn't change all that much city to city.

True cost of attendance

There is a figure that is published by every university for the Cost of Attendance by semester. This is a federally significant number because people like me who are using a 529 account for my child have to have it to legally back up expense justifications for the 529 withdrawals. So this is an IRS number - not a SEC/sports dept made up number. It factors in tuition and fees with cost of living for the area.

Every school is different...

Guess the obvious point is that it opens the door for those that will cheat to succeed, yes, even in the SEC :-)

An athletic scholarship does not cover things like extra course fees, laundry, parking fees or rent above "typical" room & board. Rent in LA/USC is 129% higher, utilities in Columbus 14% higher, etc., etc.

A Forbes article, sometime ago (sorry, no link) indicated the difference could be between $2K & $10.9K in Div-1 schools. Granted, that covers a broad spectrum of geography.

The major issue, IMO, is there are no academic requirements involved. Call it what you may, but this is pay-to-play. How about, you maintain the stipend if you maintain a 2.5 GPA & stay on track to graduate in 5 years?

I believe a school does not have to honor a letter of intent signed by a prospective student athlete.

I believe you'd be wrong. Also, even though the FAA isn't a NLI, it is binding for the school, and not the athlete.
