I know a lot of people wanted to see what LSU has coming over the next few years.

2017 Class:
Reagan Campbell

Sarah Edwards

Gracen Standley

Reagan comes from one of the best gyms in the country Texas Dreams. She should come in and make an immediate impact on beam, thats what she is known for. She is also pretty good on floor and overall pretty clean on bars.

Gracen comes from Lexi Priessmans gym, she has good training but she seems to be a project for this staff right now. She still has a long way to go on some of her gymnastics. She is actually solid on bars, she finished top ten at the J.O championships last year, I would expect her to be played with early on bar next season for depth.

Sarah is a gymnast from Mississippi, she has been brought in specifically for her vaulting. From what it looks, she will likely be working on training a 1 1/2, she has a lot of power on her vaults.

Bridget Dean was also suppose to be apart of this class but I have seen nothing released officially by LSU but her twitter still confirms she is a future LSU gymnast. She is the real deal, I have seen her in person. She is the complete set, extremely strong on beam and floor with pretty clean bars. Hopefully she will be on the team next season, if she is then LSU will be in a great position.

2018:
Christina Desiderio

She has competed at the elite level for years, shes a senior national team member, who was invited for US olympic trials. She is known for her floor and beam sets, its world class and will definitely be an immediate impact when she steps on campus. She is solid on vault, has slight form issues but not bad at all. I wouldn't expect her to compete bars ever unless something drastically happens to her there. Her form is not good at all, she has almost injured herself quite a few times just from her dismount being so close to the bar. LSU is extremely lucky to have this girl though, ridiculously talented.

I would expect for us to add another girl to this class sometime.

2019:
Bailey Ferrer
Molly Frack
Kai Rivers
Caitlin Smith

Ferrer is a really talented all arounder. She used to compete at the elite level, but not anymore. She is a good vaulter and tumbler. She also is extremely good on beam. Bars is an event that is a bit inconsistent with her though.

Molly frack used to compete at the elite level, she still has more maturing to do. She is usually either really, really good or really really bad. She would contribute for us on floor and bars. She has nice lines on that event. She has consistency problems but talent and capabilities isn't an issue.

Kai Rivers is another girl, she comes from one of the premier clubs in the country. Perfect comparison of her is to Kennedi Edney, she is an immediate impact on every event. She competes a 1 1/2 on vault, she is phenomenal on bars has some of the top bar scores in the country this year, and she is a powerful tumbler. She is considered a top ten recruit. Extremely excited we have her, will leave LSU with a lot of awards and accolades.

She is the 2020 class I think, we still got time with her. For the record we are also recruiting Finnegans sister who is young as well, she is not as good as Sarah but is still talented

Great information on the newest additions to Friday Night Flights.

It appears they are now selectively recruiting for individual events rather than all around gymnasts. Is this the general trend in collegiate recruiting?

Would a gymnast who is really good in one event be recruited even if her other routines are not the quality that an elite program would seek?

Usually gymnasts are usually pretty good with one or two events, have a 3rd solid event as well. It's pretty hard to be the complete package in the all around, Edney probably has a lot of similarities in strengths to Coureville. Edney will be an all American on vault, beam, and floor is she carries her momentum into next season. She could also be an AA on bars as well, she just needs to work on her transition to the low bar, she rushes her handstands sometimes. Bars is an event where you need to look like you aren't trying but it's natural and effortless. Look at Kayla Ross, her bars look so effortless and just clean.

Campbell should be able to contribute on beam and possibly floor. Her bars look very clean in person. She kinda exploded two years ago but she slowed down and has some trouble due to injuries but I expect her to be incredible on beam all four years

Thanks for the great writeup, Tigerbait357!

Based on what I have seen on video combined with her results at both the regional and national meets, I have always considered Campbell to be in the mold of Jessie Jordan, which would be outstanding.

Obviously, I don't know if Reagan has the same cool-as-a-cucumber personality as Jessie Jordan had, but considering beam is Reagan's best event it would make sense that she does.

If Reagan has the same impact Jessie had as a freshman (consistent 9.85-9.875) on two or three events, LSU could still be contenders for the team title in 2018 despite OU, UF and UCLA all looking really strong. Plus, Utah only loses Rowe and gets Sabrina Schwab back from injury, so it will be another dogfight among the top 5-6 teams. (sorry to take away from the original intent of the thread).

Tigerbait357, I noticed you did not write anything about Caitlin Smith, so I'll add that her best events appear to be bars and beam. She has great lines on bars, and she has a few release moves from which to choose. She has potential as an all-arounder, but I'm excited that her best event(s) are different than what we normally sign (power gymnasts on vault and floor).

Thanks for the informative recruiting updates. Just curious, how are you and a couple others on this board able to develop such knowledge of gymnastics recruits since there are no comprehensive sites like in football and basketball? I know you can check their score and a couple of others on My meet scores and a couple other similar sites but that does not reflect their true ability relative to college projection.

I grew up around gymnastics, had family members compete at the elite level before, so thats how I know a lot about gymnastics. I am friends with a few buds that work for Flogymnastics, they have scouts that attend meets. I have been able to see footage of a lot of these young athletes over the years and get feedback from other scouts.

I have seen routines from 90% of our recruits, that why I am able to tell you what they are good with and what they struggle with. Gymnastics is a really hard sport to keep up with on the recruiting trail, its not very big. Most the time all you can see is scores from meets online.

Also for the record when you look at MyMeetScores the scores are always lower than what actually happens when they get to campus. Edney scored a lot of 9.6's on bars but she translated to high 9.8s and 9.9s here so don't freakout when you see those type of scores.

If you see scores above ten is probably because they are competing at the elite level where you have two components that go into the total score. Execution is always out of 10, and your difficulty is added onto it based on how difficult the routine is. The higher difficulty routine, the much higher score you start with.

Gymnastics is probably one of the most difficult sports to recruit. You have to start extremely early in the process unfortunately but its hard to predict where they will be at a few years down the road after going through a lot of maturation with their bodies. These things have major effects on these athletes.

Tigerbait357, you certainly do a great job of researching these future gymnasts and projecting their respective impacts on the program. I like the way you are objective and also cover their limitations while not being overly judgmental. Its also nice to not have to deal with the extraneous commentary which can permeate some threads.

You are correct that gymnastics recruiting is unlike virtually any other collegiate sport's recruiting process, especially when recruiting targets are identified so young and the numbers of annual scholarships are so limited by the number of schools which actually field a team.

I would appreciate communicating with you about gymnastics and recruiting away from this board if you could email me at gpb2020@gmail.com

Keep up the great work.

Just saw that starting in fall of 2017 gymnasts will no longer be allowed to take unofficial campus visits with members of the coaching staff involved until the start of their junior year. They can still visit at any time, but must do so on their own with no involvement with anyone from the program.

This is expected to increase the number of summer camps and even some during the regular school terms. This was an apparent effort to curtail the junior high commitments. It will be curious to see how this plays out and who benefits and who loses from it.
