Considering every HC in the SEC was using the uncertainty around LSU after the firing of Miles, along with the usual drop off in recruiting after a HC change, Orgeron did pretty good in recruiting.

This ranking list didn't quite copy correctly, but you get the idea. LSU #7

Rank Team 247 ESPN Rivals Scout Avg.
1 Alabama 1 1 1 1 1
2 Ohio State 2 2 2 4 2.5
3 Georgia 3 3 3 2 2.75
4 Michigan 5 6 4 3 4.5
5 USC 4 5 6 5 5
6 Florida State 6 4 5 8 5.75
T7 LSU 7 7 8 7 7.25
T7 Oklahoma 8 8 7 6 7.25
T9 Texas A&M 12 11 10 9 10.5

Thats actually a typical ranking for LSU ranked 5-10 way more often than 1-4

Exactly my point. I was a little worried about the 2016 recruiting class, considering the negativity surrounding the program after the firing of Miles.

Look at Texas. Fired Strong, and picked up Tom Hermann. Good hire (we think), but recruiting suffered. Texas ranked #30 in the 2016 recruiting rankings.

Miles left Orgeron far more high profile recruits than Strong left Herman. This is not to undersell O keeping the class together (and pulling Chaisson). Just saying O had more to work with.

I agree with this bc look at how well Hermann is doing this cycle. He was able to snag Stern from us. Even though I think it's the better move on Stern's end because of the great haul from the 2016 class, they were still able to flip him. I think Texas can do pretty well in the next few years. I wonder how well LSU would've been with him

Orgeron would have also been ridiculed much worse had he not kept the class together so it all pans out. The important point is that we signed a top 7 class while changing HCs. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

IMO 2019 is where he should really be judged on how well he implemenets his own plan to keep who we want in LA then replace who doesn't come with equal or better talent from OOS. You could say it will be easier for him in 2019 but you could also say he will have to fight off everyone in America to keep who he wants and then if he loses some can he replace them with equal or better talent?

One thing is certain if they can perform at a high level on the field it will go a long way in helping achieve their goals in recruiting, in state or OOS. Wins and loses will matter but LSU looking like an improved team will matter much more IMO. Can't wait to see what happens! HTT

Majority of kids were committed already. Majority of staff stayed the same. Let's see how we do going forward.

I was too, compare that too Miles who pulled a #22 ranking in 2005. But O did have advantages that Herman and Miles didn't as well. He was named head coach much earlier in the cycle than Miles (and earlier, though not by a lot, than Herman) and quickly decided to keep the bulk of his staff in place.

None the less, it was a job well done.

Why? One of the main points in hiring O was to keep the class mostly intact. The class was already super high in the rankings, hiring the recruiting coordinator as the HC kept the class in that range.

- Hired the guy who was the HC since game 3
- Hired the recruiting coordinator
- Class was pretty high profile to begin with
- Only got rid of one of the major recruiters for the team

Pretty sure the entire idea was to keep this class from falling apart.

Texas's recruiting wasn't really that high when Strong was failing during the season. Plus Herman was an outside guy and that typically happens with a coaching change.

As the "interim" head coach. Nobody knew if he was going to get the job permanently until after the regular season was over.

Not knowing if he would be HC or someone else, Coach O cancelled all on-campus recruiting. Even players committed to LSU were not allowed to make official visits to LSU. I think December 19th was the date he set for official visits to commence.

Doing this he still added 4-star rated players - K'Lavon Chaisson (#4 WDE), Jacob Phillips (#1 ILB), Todd Harris (#11 S), and Tyler Taylor (#11 ILB). When even in mid to late January LSU was not expected to sign any of them.

It definitely was.. Take away O's recruiting acumen (specifically related to last year) and there is absolutely nothing that makes him a more attractive candidate than Larry Fedora for example.

But had we gone that type of route you're probably looking at #25 or so.

The title of the thread made me think something entirely different. I thought it was going to be about the 2016 signing class, but it's actually about the 2017 class. Just confused me at first.

AFTER the firing of Miles was the 2017 class. Just clarifying your OP and thread title.

ETA: I posted before reading responses. Looks like BillF had same concern.

What's this got to do with Orgeron? Miles was still head coach for the 2016 recruiting class.
