Class of '13 Top 30 Louisiana Football Prospects

1) Rickey Jefferson - WR - Destrehan ( 6-0, 185) - Younger brother of LSU QB Jordan Jefferson. Received an offer from the Tigers last week at their football camp. Also played RB last year for the Wildcats, who try to get him as many touches as possible. Loves to get the ball on a speed sweep and pick his way through a defense. The complete package: speed, hands, leaping ability and confidence.

2) Kaleb Blanchard - RB - Denham Springs (6-1, 190) - Tough runner between the tackles who shows a breakaway burst in the open field. Rushed for close to 1,800 yards last year and averaged 9.5 yards per carry on a Class 5A team. Gashed Catholic-BR for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 41-34 loss.

3) John Diarse - ATH - Neville (6-1, 200) - Another prospect who has starred since his freshman year for a large school power. Rang up close to 2,200 yards of total offense as a QB in 2010. Could move to his more natural position (wide receiver) if QB Jamond Collins (transfer from Carroll) is cleared to play. Diarse is just as effective when he's on the defensive side of the ball (at DB).

4) Desean Smith - TE - Barbe (6-4, 220) - Listed as a TE, but he frequently lines up at wide receiver (mainly in the slot) in the Buccaneers' spread offense. Big target who wants the football in his hands. Isn't shy about calling for the ball. Teams up with '14 WR Trey Quinn to form arguably the best pass-catching duo in the state. Reports are circulating that Smith got an offer from Texas A&M last week.

5) Jeryl Brazil - ATH - Loranger (5-9, 175) - Fastest player in the state, along with Derrick Raymond (East Jefferson). Won both the 100 and 200 state titles as a sophomore in 3A. Ran a sizzling 4.35 at the New Orleans Under Armour Combine. Got his first offer last week from LSU. Scored 21 touchdowns in 2010.

6) Deondre Skinner - WR/TE - Patterson (6-3, 210) - Plays tight end for now, but the future holds many possibilities for Skinner, who reports an early offer from Texas A&M. Catches the ball well in traffic. Nice red-zone target due to size mismatches with smaller CBs.

7) Ryan Hoefeld - OL - Brother Martin (6-3, 265) - Filled both offensive tackle slots last year for the Crusaders. Paved the way for RB Dante' Butler's wildly successful year. Already holds the school bench press record (350 pounds). Could project as a guard or center on the next level. Tremendous leg drive.

8) X'Zavier Preston - LB - Evangel Christian (5-11, 225) - Ideal physique for an inside linebacker. With Jermauria Rasco gone to LSU, this is the next big name on deck for ECA defensive coordinator Byron Dawson. Built like a freight train.

9) Duke Riley - LB - John Curtis Christian (6-1, 195) - Aggressive, hard-nosed LB who can line up outside or inside (plays inside for Curtis). Takes good angles to the football and is fluid in pass coverage. Chases down plays from sideline-to-sideline. Led the Patriots in tackles last year.

10) Noel Ellis - CB - Edna Karr (5-10, 170) - Shut down and/or neutralized some marquee receivers last year (Dwayne Benjamin, Charles Henderson). Basically took away one side of the field for the 4A runner-up Cougars. Plays bigger than his size would indicate. Picked off nine passes in 2010.

11) Larry Cage - LB - Zachary - (6-2, 190) - Equally adept at both stopping the run and dropping back into coverage. Lines up all over the field (DE, ILB, OLB) for head coach Neil Weiner. Displays uncanny ability to read and diagnose plays for a young prospect playing 5A football. Ran a 4.40 at the Baton Rouge NUC.

12) Karl Malone - OL - Cedar Creek (6-4, 285) - Son of the former Louisiana Tech and NBA great picked up his first offer recently (from Alabama). Plays for a small private school, but the Crimson Tide's offer will dispel any talk that Malone needs to transfer to Ruston High in order to prove himself against tougher competition.

13) Carlton Perkins - RB - Walker (5-11, 175) - Comes from the same area as fellow '13 stud RB Kaleb Blanchard. Walker (not to be confused with O.P. Walker in the metro New Orleans area), in fact, is Denham Springs' arch-rival. Perkins, like Blanchard, has surprising strength for a player his age and size. Ran a 4.55 at the Baton Rouge NUC.

14) Christopher Robinson - DT - Woodlawn-SH (6-2, 250) - Joins four-star DE/LB Torshiro Davis on the Knights' defensive line. Will get to showcase his skills in front of a large amount of college scouts this year. Reports an early Mississippi State offer.

15) Josh Thomas - OT - Evangel Christian (6-5, 290) - Should blossom into a highly-recruited offensive lineman over the course of the next several months.

16) Sergio Medina - S - Hahnville (5-11, 195) - Teammate and fellow DB Jerquinick Sandolph is already committed to LSU, and Medina will join Sandolph in the SEC if he continues to progress at the current rate. Medina made numerous timely tackles and interceptions last year for the Tigers. Runs a 23.00 in the 200 meters.

17) David Elias - DL - Dutchtown (6-3, 265) - Made first-team all-district for the Griffins, who were the No. 1 seed in the 2010 5A playoffs. Could eventually outgrow DE and move down to DT. Has superior speed for his size and age (4.9).

18) Kenneth Santa Maria - OT - McDonogh #35 (6-6, 340) - The next Derek Edinburgh? Could be. Performed well at last week's LSU football camp.

19) Deshaun Diggs - RB - Terrebonne (5-10, 185) - Does his future lie in football or basketball? Diggs averaged 24 points per game as a sophomore on the hardwood for Terrebonne, which is a 5A program. On the gridiron, he gained 861 yards rushing with 14 TDs. Ask New Iberia about him. Diggs ripped through the Yellow Jackets' D for 142 yards and 2 TDs on only 12 carries in a 23-20 loss.

20) Kendall Beckwith - QB - East Feliciana (6-3, 220) - Led East Feliciana, a first-year program, to a berth in the 2A semifinals (lost to John Curtis). Threw for approximately 1,600 yards with 18 TDs and only 4 interceptions. Added 863 yards rushing with 15 TDs.

21) Chris Taylor - OG - Zachary (6-3, 320) - Surprisingly agile and quick on his feet. Is able to get down the field and take care of business on screens. Also is a destructive blocker who is able to get out of his stance and clears the way on traps and counters.

22) Jay Washington - S - St. Paul's (6-0, 185) - Started on one of the state's best defenses as a sophomore. Was teammates with four-star DT Mickey Johnson, who is now at LSU. Washington helped the Wolves to a perfect regular season in 2010. He was among the team's top tacklers. Washington camps today with Southern Miss and Southeastern in Hammond. Intercepted two passes vs. Ponchatoula.

23) Donald Gage - WR - Redemptorist (5-11, 165) - Named WR MVP at the Baton Rouge NUC. Could be a candidate for breakout player of the year in the Baton Rouge area. The Wolves probably won't run the football as often, now that RB Jeremy Hill and OT Lael Collins have graduated. Gage runs a 4.48 and has the hops to get up in the air and grab the jump ball.

24) Claude George - DE/LB - Acadiana (6-1, 205) - 4.63 speed. Weight is temporarily down after having his tonsils removed. Spent the bulk of his time at DE last year, but is a hybrid who can play standing up just as well. Recorded 10.5 sacks and recovered a crucial fumble that led to the winning score in the Class 5A state championship game vs. West Monroe.

25) Tevin Horton - RB - John Curtis Christian (5-10, 190) - When you watch his highlight film, it brings back memories of a young Kenny Cain (now a LB at TCU). Horton is bullish when he takes the ball on the dive. Once in the open field, he's able to either slip past, run through or run past defenders.

26) Jermaine Antoine - ATH - Loreauville (5-10, 170) - Named DB MVP at yesterday's Lafayette NUC. Already a seasoned player -- has started since his freshman year for the remotely-located Bayou-Area program. Can play WR or DB (or kick returner). Helped team to the Class 2A quarterfinals last year (lost to eventual state champ Evangel Christian). Interesting opener this fall vs. Central Catholic ('12 LB/S Lloyd Grogan, '13 WR Dontrell Brown).

27) Shelby Christy - WR - Dutchtown (6-3, 175) - Has all the physical tools. Exceptional leaping ability. Doesn't mind blocking and does a good job at it. State qualifier in both the long jump and triple jump.

28) Justin Williams - WR - Terrebonne (6-2, 210) - Caught 31 passes for 462 yards in 2010. Grabbed 6 catches for 109 yards and 2 TDs in his team's 49-14 win over Central Lafourche.

29) Tredavious White - WR - Green Oaks (5-10, 175) - Hauled in 52 receptions last year and averaged 25-plus yards per kick return. Good concentration. Makes the catch, even when he knows the big hit is forthcoming.

30) Darian Claiborne - LB - Port Allen (6-1, 220) - Aggressive head-hunter who doesn't mind throwing his body around the field with reckless abandon.

30) TIE Damien Williams - QB - Archbishop Rummel (6-1, 215) - Has plenty of experience - been a starter since his freshman year. Threw for almost 1,100 yards last season for a team that isn't known for having a wide-open offense.

Agree with you about Smith and Quinn, but it will be interesting to see what happens to their stats with Foster (QB) at LSU now. The million dollar question in SW LA is can Barbe still get those two the ball?

Smith is 6'5" with long arms and a big mismatch for most high school DB's, so I think he will still get his catches. Quinn is a threat to all parts of the field, and will not be sneaking up on anybody this year. Both him and the other 2014 kid (Fournette) will be accounted for by other teams D/C, they are no longer the freshman from out of nowhere. I think Fournette will still get his yards, sounds like St. Aug just re-loaded the O-line.

I enjoyed following both St. Aug and Barbe's offenses last year. I wish them both success again this fall. I agree with Smith's top 5 ranking, I hear he is hitting the camp circuit and I am sure his offers are to come, hopefully one from us soon!

Need to add Jatavious "Jay" Wilson, 5'10" 165, WR Bastrop. He's every bit as good as Diarse and Jefferson. Had over 1200 yds recieving which led Bastrop and was 1st team All-State.

I think this is a Mike Coppage list from a week or so ago. Its a work in progress and was compiled from film available on the prospects or personally watching them in games or camps. Guy is working hard to make sure every deserving player is exposed for the working masses and coaches. Catch him on the La. Tech scout site.

Yes it is. He's been writing some good articles previewing 2012, 2013 and 2014 student athletes.

Rickey Jefferson ahead of Diarse? I dont think so. Same with Blanchard, didn't this board agree that he is vastly overrated? Diarse is an animal.
