or just a coincidence that who they targeted just happened to be a little bigger? It just seems that Herron & Bower are different style of DE than Mingo & Sam. Either way I think this DL class as a unit is just sick. Imagine these guys in 3 years

Hybrid guys who can play inside or outside. More versatility combined with athletic OLBs.

We still brought in Patterson and Neal, both of whom are pretty light for DE's. I think we're just getting the best players we can and not worrying that much about playing style for now. Plus, if they get too big they can always move inside.

I don't think Herron/Bower are all that different. Bower could bulk all the way up to DT, but as ends they could play in that 240-260 range, which is where we had Sam at (and were trying to get Mingo to).

Really looking forward to watching Neal pass-rush, he is a natural talent there. I'm predicting Dwight Freeney kind o moves.

This right here, the versatility of this DL class, plus Beckwith possibly on certain downs is a coach's dream. I bet Chief is chomping at the bit to get these guys in pads

No because despite size, they all have burst...

Y'know what I'm getting a little suspicious about?

I'm beginning to think LSU might be preparing to experiment with a 3-4.

Think about this: If Herron grows to be 280-290, isn't he a perfect 3-4 defensive end? What if Bower grows to that size? And doesn't Lacouture fit that same bill?

Is Bain not a textbook 3-4 nose guard? Gilmore might be more of a 4-3 DT than anything else, but he looks like he could play a 3-4 defensive end just fine.

Are Beckwith and Jones not pretty well-suited to ILB duty in a 3-4? How about Patterson and Neal as OLB's in a 3-4? I'm not quite sure how Riley fits into a 3-4 defense, but the rest of these guys seem like they might be as well or better suited to 3-4 as 4-3.

Not going to happen. Bowers/Herron/Lacouture are all SDEs. They're usually bigger anyway. Sam was about 260-270 this year.

LSU still has small DEs with burst in Patterson/Neal. Beckwith is also a potential WDE with burst too. LSU has 3 DEs that add versatility and might be DTs. Herron is rated a 5* for a reason. He has great burst for someone who is huge already. Herron might be a small DT in our system. Bain/Gilmore aren't 3-4 DTs. Chavis doesn't run a 3-4 and never has and never will.

I don't see Bowers ever moving from DE. Adding versatility is a good problem to have in figuring out where they will play best. LSU shored up both DE/DT needs. I think that's why they took Bain/Gimore. They are project players in a sense that they have great physical tools but they need a kick in the arse. Bain is definitely more of a project than Gilmore but Gilmore showed some laziness. Both have physical tools to work with. Our three bigger DEs are insurance if they bust, IMO.

Chavis won't sacrifice size for speed. However, he has said that he would like to have guys that are just as fast but bigger. Basically we have been settling for the smaller guys because they are faster. But if you can get both (beckwith, Herron ect) you would definitely take that.

Posted this earlier here.

Mingo is 6'5", 240 lbs, and ran a 4.55 40
Montgomery is 6'5", 260 lbs, and ran a 4.65 40

Bower is 6'5", 241 lbs, and runs a 4.8 40
Herron is 6'5", 245 lbs, and runs a 5.1 40

The new guys may not be quite as fast right now, but they're still plenty fast and I'm looking forward to watching them compete to start on the best D line in the SEC!

There never was such a philosophy. Sam's not light. Neither is Lavar. You're basing all of this on one freak athlete - Mingo.

40 yard dashes are great and all, but playing DE is more about quickness off the line, acceleration, and power

Would I like all our DEs to run 4.5s? Of course. Do they need to run 4.5s to be first round draft picks? Absolutely not.

on any given play we use a 3-4 or 4-3. our main diet is 4-3 but our de's and lb's are almost the same size. depends on the competition and the situation in a game. sometimes you need more beef up front. we just don't have that mamoth nose tackle.

We do not use a 3-4 and never have under Chavis. Mustang package is not the same as a 3-4. 3-4 is saying 3 down lineman and 4 LBs. LSU has never used that package before. Mustang is 3 down lineman, 2 LB and 6 DBs. Sometimes we run a 3-3-5 in the Mustang. Like we did with Coleman's Senior year.
