Is Austin Thomas still recruiting for Pete Jenkins?
Posted by SlowFlowPro on 9/19/17 at 11:40 am39
i did a google search of "austin thomas pete jenkins" and it didn't hit on anything of note past February
does anyone have legitimate info on whether or not Thomas is allowed to recruit (i mean off campus, make contact, etc) in Jenkins' place this year?
i could be wrong but i can't imagine the NCAA giving a waiver for 2017 like they did last year (b/c last year there was turnover and there is no excuse for it this year. this would just create a MAJOR loophole for teams to take advantage of down the road and i can't see the NCAA being that stupid)

He needs to start searching for OL/DL ASAP.

Can we replace Alleva with Austin?

Thomas gets waiver
Austin Thomas is back on the road recruiting, and that’s good news for Orgeron.
“Great recruiter,” the coach said of Thomas. “Great evaluator.”
Thomas, LSU’s general manager, is being allowed to continue to recruit this spring via a waiver through the Southeastern Conference office, Orgeron confirmed. Thomas spent the fall and January recruiting in place of defensive line coach Pete Jenkins, a 75-year-old who came out of retirement to join Orgeron’s interim staff.
The SEC granted a waiver for Thomas to recruit on an interim staff and has continued it. Orgeron was not sure when or if the waiver expires.
Orgeron retained Jenkins on his long-term staff. Jenkins is known to many as one of the premier defensive line instructors in the college game. He spends part of his spring tutoring NFL-bound college players in technique, and players raved about their improvements under Jenkins' leadership this fall.

He is.
Check the latest LSU Sports Insider podcast interview (with Chris Blair). Pretty sure he himself said he's got the waiver.

Yeah its not traditionally going to work, but you sure can sell a guy with Jenkins history and Thomas is good recruiter. In a way, it can be a win-win.

I would like to think he knows but just doesn't want to say, but after his comments about the RB rotation he may be telling the truth...

until Saban stocks his coaching staff with guys who just coach and gets waivers for his recruiting staff to take over
can't imagine that helping them out

When I read stuff like this, coupled with his comment after the game that he didn't know why Guice wasn't playing, I don't get a happy feeling.

is LSU the only major program that has a position coach that does not recruit? This is not a flame, just wondering if there is another example of this. It does seem like a disadvantage.

i'm curious about that, too
i don't see how this won't be abused by programs with smart coaches like Saban. you can basically increase your coaching or recruiting staff a great deal by getting waivers for coaches and adding super recruiters. just think about all the shadow staff Bama uses who are disgraced recruiters. just imagine if they had a legit RB coach and Burns got to focus on his recruiting, or the same with Locksley, or they got a better OLB coach and let Tosh Lupoi run wild focusing 100% on recruiting
this seems like a Pandora's box scenario. i can't imagine the justification by the SEC/NCAA to allow LSU to abuse the system like they re

Those are very good points, but totally contradicts the thinking by many on here that it is the worst thing ever that our D-line coach does not recruit, even though his replacement was one of the best recruiters in the nation last year.

It's obviously a loophole, but it's not hard to limit it to one position coach, and evaluate it on a case by case basis with ability to travel being a factor. Let's be honest, Saban already does this. His staff analysts are the actual position coaches. There have been multiple instances of players talking to analysts on the sidelines, something the NCAA doesn't allow but could never enforce. Tosh Lupoi's title might as well be Snapchat manager.
With the NCAA voting to allow a 10th assistant soon I suspect this will be a topic that gets more coverage and clarification, right now there's a shite load of grey area to hide in.

Yeah, the guy ONLY flipped a 4* LB from OU and reeled in our only 5*. So yeah, let's make sure he stays in that office that Les got for Kragthorpe. Never mind his track record at UT and USC; if he's not coaching a position... CEO fricked it up.

Does anyone know if lsu is the only school in the country without a position coach that does not have a special teams title too? I would think LSU is the only school in the country that relies strictly on our shadow staff for special teams

WTF isn't Karl Dunbar coaching at LSU instead of Jenkins?
LSU lets one of their own kill us at AL?
And where is Kevin Mawae?
