H.S. Coaches holding recruitment letters

What is the deal with high school coaches holding recruitment letters from players? I talked to the dads of 2 players of local high schools this weeks and they told me the coach held there kids letters all season! I understand that they might not have the time to give the kids each letter on the day it comes. But seems like they could give them to them every couple of weeks or so. When I played ball in high school our coaches would never do something like that! They wanted to see us get the attention and go play at the next level if possible. I guess some coaches consider other things besides whats best for their players.

why wouldnt the letter go to the kids home?

because they dont start off knowing a kids address maybe?
All letters go to the school with the players name on it so they fill out a form. Then the mail can start going to the home if the schools send it there.

This wasn't the case where I went to school. The guys who got recruitment letters from coaches were always called to the principal's office after school to pick them up.
I have heard of this before, though, and it baffles me.

It's a very strange thing to do, especially nowadays when recruiting is starting earlier and earlier. It's putting kids at a disadvantage.

this does happen, and its really a shame. and its mostly old school coaches, who only care about their program at the present time and do not worry about the kids future. I know one sure school that does this

Not completely. My younger siblings missed over a dozen visits this year (game day, junior day, etc.) because the coaches delivered the letters to them way too late.

I figure that this is the case. Not just that they aren't worried about the kids, but they may not know any better about how the recruiting process has evolved throughout their career.

I have a relative where that happened to him in the 70s. He was a TE. At some point, the Sulphur coach wasn't happy with the fact that he wasn't interested in LSU. He took an unofficial to Colorado St. and ended up loving it up there (he's the cowboy type). He came back from that trip and told the coaches that he wanted to go to Colorado St. but didn't have an offer at the time. Colorado St. ended up sending him an offer and the Sulphur coach kept that offer and never showed it to him. Colorado St. had called on signing day and asked why he never responded to their offer.
He ended up at La. Tech. But had to come back home due to some personal issues.
Pretty shitty move on the coaches part. He had been in contact with NFL scouts while he was at Tech and some shite went down and it just all went down the toilet. I know everyone loves those "what could have been" stories, but he was good when he played. If he wouldn't have went to LaTech, things might have turned out differently.

a friend of mine (basketball player) transferred to a different high school because our coach held his letters, and also wouldn't let college coaches come to practice

I spoke with a friend of mine who is detective with BRPD and he said he is sure that coaches withholding mail is a federal felony. If someone really want to cause trouble for a coach that does hold letters just report him the the postmaster and he can be charged. I don't think many coaches are aware of this!

How is it in this day and age when any college offers a kid, the internet world knows about it within minutes, does a kid not know he has an offer by a college? Doesn't sound right.

The story he was talking about happened ~40 years ago.

It's more frequent than people think. Most of the time it's a case where coaches do it because they want the kids focus to be on school and the hs team. In some cases it's a matter of a coach having allegiences to another school. Sometimes a matter of a kid being committed and the coach withholding letters to try and influence kids to stick to their word. I personally think it's a bad thing no matter the reason. If the letter is to the kid, give it to the kid in a timely manner. It's not like the coaches don't see the kids daily. It's n ot that hard to remember that a kid received a letter from a college.
