So just how important is heighth on the D line ?
We have a kid in Aledo 3 year starter on 5A state championship team. He is 5'9 280 and just takes over games.

He is playing next to a TCU commit and looks just as good even better at times. He is a junior with zero offers. No I'm not his father or family member

James Williams Aledo High School seems like a stud NT in the 3-4

Damn. Must be a little bowling bowl. I played with a guy that was about that height that played on the dline and he absolutely dominated. 6'5" offensive lineman would have a hard time getting a hold of that little booger.

Just have him do what all recruits do. Add an inch or 2 to his recruiting profile. If he's 5'9 or 5'10 then he can pass for 5'11 or 6ft on tape.

Problem is typically arm length and ability to see the game. Arm length especially. These massive linemen will envelop him.

Height doesn't always mean arm length and some people at 5'10 have the same arm length as someone that's 6'3 never know but I agree you need to have arm length, to keep them away. Height does give you leverage and can make you seem stronger then you are. You just have a better shot at the 6'3 and up DLman having all the tools needed to be great and develop. That's not to say there isn't shorter guys that can play but it's not likely then you have frame and weight issues as well. A guy 6'3 can put on weight and carry it not so much for the shorter ones. You can get great DEs and Linebackers out of 5'10 5'11 though. It can happen so I say go to camps and prove ya self in front of the coaches if you think you can dominate as a shorter player. Never know

Big James is good but he's generously 5'9. While he is incredibly strong I wouldn't call him quick at the p5 level which you have to be at 5'9. He will have a list of offers don't worry. They just might not be to teams that play in front of 100k

Watching him win the 5A state championship right now. I enjoy seeing him at fullback in the goal line set

He was impressive. Seems like it would be easier to penetrate with the low center of gravity. Linemen would have a hard time with leverage on him.

being from the area i have seen this kid, north texas had a nose guard back in the early 2000's that was very similar to him (Anthony Kennedy if i remember correctly). Due to his height i would think he'll be a late offer and probably 1aa or d2, but maybe a utsa or north texas will give him chance. like you say, he is a stud

Most important thing is pad level. Some DL play "too high". I actually like a shorter DT for leverage. Think a 6'1" guy like Booger was. This is where coaching comes in also. Remember how much better Godchaux and co were after O arrived? Techniques.
