every day young men and women

Take a pledge to protect our country and do so with the understanding they may be in combat and harms way at a moments notice.

They do so without a public announcement, no espn, TD, no fanfare of any source. So why do these young men want to be on stage, simply to accounce their choice of where they will play a game, make a commitment and go on with your life. why all the fuss about announcing on ESPN, UA game or any other outlet.

pray for our Veterans they deserve our prayers.

With all due respect, being a soldier and being a star high school football player are two completely different things.

What are you talking about?

I respect anyone's choice to become a soldier, but these two things are not related.

because unlike people pledging for the military, people actually care where these kids pledge to play football

Yeah I don't get it either. I can't imagine why in the heck they would want to be on ESPN televised nationally.

Then maybe you should take it up with the U.S. Army's public relations machine. They're the one glorifying these kids decisions...

I understand that having been a high school athlete and being in combat.

My point is just make your commitment and go on with your life, your choice of a college will not alter your life as other decisions will. Why act like a hero before you have not earned it.

I didn't miss anything. You're just flaming a board for no reason.

Because these are 18 year old kids who can get a lot of attention. 99% of kids would do this if given the opportunity.

Almost anybody can join the army.

People like you who seek out recognition for the military, at the expense of others (in this case, ballplayers), diminish what the people in the military accomplish, IMO.

Obviously D1 athletes are extremely rare, but your statement that anyone can join the military is incorrect - approximately 75% of the 17-24 population would not qualify for military service. Even fewer can withstand the demands of maintaining membership.

Thanks for the response, and I reread my post and cannot find where I stated "every one" or "anyone" can join the military.

I did not say these young men are wrong for commiting in such a public way, just wondering why they cannot call the coach and say "I will be honored to play for?????).

I guess my point was not clear.

Not so Stringray, only one in four qualify for Army service due to moral, medical or test scores.
