Basketball: How many available scholarships will Wade actually have?

Rachal said yesterday he is honoring his commitment.

Assuming that Alexander does as well, how many spots do we have? Just 1?

Any chance Wade encourages somebody else on the team to pursue other options in order to clear up another?

Any chance of the VCU PF commitment following him?

We have 10 scholarship players who in theory are returning, leaving 3 scholarships for this class - and 1 remaining (as you said) assuming Rachal and Alexander stay on board.

Wouldn't be surprised to see at least one more scholarship open up with either a transfer, Blakeney potentially declaring, etc.

Imagine there is a decent chance 1 or 2 of Wade's VCU commits follows him to LSU. To early to tell.

Just one right now. I suspect there will be a bit more attrition however, both natural and/or "forced".

Poor Elbert needs to be a walk on
Amazing the lack of development from him, I can't put that all on Jones

Why the hell not? He didn't do anything with the rest of the club either

He's just a bad fit all around for LSU. Under Jones LSU wanted to go fast on offense and they were completely inefficient in half-court sets. Robinson can't play in an uptempo game. He's also just so very slow, even for a 7 footer. But the biggest problem is he's just never been taught how to use his size. Many of his shots come from a low release point. He's basically a 7 footer playing like a 6'7 center

He would better served playing at a smaller school

Is the talk that some of Wade's VCU commits are thinking of following him here real or just speculation?

I don't think it is as easy as them wanting to come to LSU with Wade and being allowed to. They have already signed their letters of intent, so they would need to be released by VCU with no restrictions on the team (i.e., LSU) they can sign with.

I think Alexander will end up being released from his letter. Which is fine. He was probably going to be limited if not redshirted anyway due to the injury.

I think Blakeney leaves to. I love his talent, but he is a hot/cold player and I'd be nervous building around him. He goes pro.

Robinson is a tough call. Normally I'd say let Seniors just finish, but he has health issues and just not a contributor. I would let him find somewhere else to go.

Sims is family with Jones, but he is also a legacy. I hope he stays, along with Sampson and Mays. But I'll be surprised if one of the 3 doesn't leave. Throw Heyward into this group. I'm guessing one of the 4 transfers (I'll bet on it being Heyward).

The other Seniors (Patterson, Epps, Jenkins and Reath) should stick around and finish here. That should leave us with..

Mays/Patterson
Sampson/Jenkins
Sims/Rachal
Epps
Reath

That leaves 5 spots to fill for next season. Hopefully at least 1 or 2 big bodies. But some transfers might have to sit out a year, so he needs some flexibility. Depends on who he gets, but probably be a down year (can't be much worse than last). Recruiting will be huge next year with 6-7 open spots. Has to be a great class..

Alexander said he was still firm in his commitment and he fits the exact mold of what Wade is looking for. He's a super athletic 6'7 wing that can end up being an elite defender, in not sure why you or anyone else would be "fine" with him choosing to go elsewhere.

I'd be fine with releasing him if he didn't want to come here now. Its his choice and a coaching change is an adequate reason for him to have a change of heart. I'd love for him to stick with us, but not going to blame him either way.

Somebody posted this site a couple of years back. It explains the roster history well.

Weekly weigh ins, dietary plans, and intense conditioning are Wade program staples apparently.

Big ole Elbert is either gonna quit or lose 30 lbs and be an effective big man off the bench.

We don't "build around him". We use him as a SG for one year and he goes pro. His athleticism is perfect for Wade's pace of play and intensity.

We "build around" a new class.

Said he's still coming. Not sure why he'd be released?

IMO Sampson transfers. I think Heyward stays.

Really hope Epps can be utilized properly with Wade. I think he will be. I'm pumped for the future.

He lost like 60 pounds his freshman year and it made him as soft as tissue paper. As crazy as it sounds, his ideal playing weight is around 290. He just needs to find a system that needs a big space eater

I want LSU to recruit good basketball players, but I would skip over the guys who will be one and done. Ben Simmons really didn't help LSU basketball out much. Unless, Will Wade thinks he can keep a player for 2 years optimally 3 years.

You need a mix.

Ben Simmons absolutely helped LSU basketball out. Johnny Jones coaching just ruined it. We had the national spotlight on us and he had an insanely great freshman year. If we had made the tournament, which any good coach would've done last year, we would've had prime time slots and millions of viewers because of Ben.

And he made our team better. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

Well said.

If we had a competent coach that would have had the roster set a little better for Simmons arrival and someone that could actually coach an offense, we would actually be considered a legit program and not a laughing stock right now.

What number of walk-ons would Will Wade want if Will Wade would want walk-ons?
