Tyrann Mathieu from New Orleans (La.) St. Augustine doesn't have any offers and there wasn't much known about him before today but don't be surprised if one is on the way from Tennessee. He was unbelievable in pass coverage. As a pure cover guy, I just can't imagine how a kid could have had a better performance than he had today. Doesn't have ideal height but he has awesome hips and ridiculous makeup speed.

Sounds good to me!

Other comments from Tenn. board

-Probably the best overall player at camp yesterday. He needs an offer right now. Top flight Elite-Cornerback prospect.

-By the afternoon session, Mathieu was being called out by every coach or wide receiver that wanted a challenge. Even while taking the best shot from the best receivers in attendance, Mathieu won almost every rep. In a drill in which the defense is at a major disadvantage, breakups and pure stops are hard to come by but those plays became routine for Mathieu.

Barton Simmons

-After seeing some of the videos, and based on what I heard, how did he not leave with an offer? He shut down all of the top WRs and only lost a couple of 1 on 1s.

-In the videos on the Camp Update thread, he goes against some of the best at the camp, including the Landry kid, Brantley, and others and he pretty much shut down everyone...

-Mathieu was arguably the story of the event as he came out of nowhere to dominate the one-on-ones. He has such a smooth backpedal, great hips and surprising burst, but it's his closing speed and ability to get his head around and make plays on the ball that separates him from the best. Small wide receivers couldn't run past him and he handled bigger guys with his athleticism, hops and instincts. He isn't the biggest kid, but as a cover corner he had an amazing day.

-Let's pray he would rather be coached b Monte than by Chavis.

-After his performance at camp, why in the world have we not offered this kid yet? The Rivals article says he favors LSU.....but we are 2nd. We need to pull the trigger on this kid. AS soon as he camps at LSU we are gonna lose him for sure if we havent offered before them.

-If the kid shut down every WR at the Camp, I don't see why he wasn't offered on the spot. I understand that pads, gmae situation, etc are also contributing factors, but come on, he shut down the 7 on 7 and the 1 vs 1. He came all the way from Louisiana to a 1 day camp has to stand for something. The kid efinitely is interested, and we need to scoop him up before everyone else gets their dibs in.

LINK

- link saying he should have a vol offer by the end of the week.

- Rivals didnt have his profile until Barton watched him at the TN camp.

Moffitt and Cooper will turn him into an All-SEC corner within 2 yrs of his arrival on campus.

this is puzzling...the coaches know what they are doing, but this is odd. Not normal for a good recruit to go unnoticed by every program in the country. Welcome to the program Tyrann

This is only what? His 2nd camp? Most of these guys that are rated and are noticed go through the camp system as Tyrann is doing. First, the Tenn. camp and now the LSU camp....where he got offered

Miles doesn't need recruiting services or other school offers to tell him how good a recruit is. When his staff likes what they see, they make an offer.

Welcome aboard Tyrann!

Agreed. IMO, it is very common for a football recruit to appear out of no where. Now basketball is a different story.

It happens every single year. And it has happened before a lot with kids from New Orleans.

I'm guessing most looked at his height and wrote him off. Hell, I might have too. If you watch his videos he looks tiny until he starts making huge plays. Very physical kid too.

I didn't think 5'10" was that small for a CB. That is if he is actually 5'10"

Best pure cover corner in LA and will be a 4* once rivals has more film. Great pick-up. Another camp or so and he'd have offers from everyone in the southeast.

I think he's probably sold on us. LSU was his favorite, home state, and the first to offer. THis kid is already one of my favorites for this class.

Also, anyone know what other camps he plans on going to?

I agree. There are plenty NFL corners in the 5'11" to 5'9" range. CB must be explosive, quick, reasonably fast, and instinctive, so as long as he is not really short, I like the pick up.

He's still 2-3 inches taller than Hurd. There was no way Hurd was going to be able to cover the Julio's and A.G. Green's of the SEC.

Who was the kid last year that shot up the rankings after camps and his performance at the HS All Star Game? Same story, small overlooked, incredible cover corner. Was from Georgia maybe?
