Yes, I know that 5 star recruits are most likely going to be good. Just look at Mississippi State's Jeffery Simmons. MSU's only 5 star in the last 3 years, but development and coaching is also a big contributor for success. MSU's last 3 recruiting classes that just kicked our butt's:

1 - 5 Star
14 - 4 Star
48 - 3 Star
2 - 2 Star

Recruiting is not our problem! Keeping them and developing them epically on the interior lines sure seems like our problem

So we are now comparing our recruiting classes to Mississippi State.

LSU has hit rock bottom.

LSU doesn't aspire to be like Mississippi St. In their very best season they should never be within 2 touchdowns.

Can we please close this 3 star vs 5 star thread. How many times......
If a guy is bigger, stronger, faster, and more skilled there is a much higher ceiling, get it? LSU wants to win national championships, not the EGG BOWL!

With fricking Ed Orgeron as HC? Sure they'll be developed to be undisciplined football players. I guess technically you are right.

Why doesn't Saban develop 3 stars? MS may have better OL than LSU but they are not going to dominate Alabama.

What if the "bigger, stronger, faster and more skilled" player is already much closer to his ceiling? Sometimes the only difference between a 4 and a 3 might be simply a year in age, so the lower rated player might actually have more potential.

If a team needs immediate help, then higher rated players should theoretically be better. But if a team has time to develop players, there's nothing wrong with taking lower rated players with a lot of upside.

The ones who are supposed to know best are the coaches and they don't care about ratings. They look at potential, whether immediate or future. Anyone else is just a talking head.

I think character plays a huge role in a players development so that's who I would be recruiting the guys that have the natural leadership characteristics along with athletic ability. Toughness, mental and physical along with football awareness is vital to a good football player. Natural stregth is as well. The kids we have been bringing in since Orgeron has been here have been of a different kind of breed IMO. If he can continue to do that and provide good depth along the OL and DL as well as in the MLB core and at QB LSU will be just fine.

This last game hasn't been what I've seen from these coaches in the last 8 games so to think that this is the norm isn't a fair assessment IMO. I think they will play a totally different game this week, one with minimal mistakes, and just a sound football game. I would literally tell them all to slow the frick down and play a more sound game. Stay close to your man while playing good technique but slow down a bit in your head and let the game come to you. Just slow down to start the game and speed it up once you get your legs into the game.

This team can improve drastically from what we saw but we are short on depth in key spots. If they play sound football though they will be in every game. Stop trying to do too much and just do your jobs to the best of your ability.

I saw a Texas team play totally different from Maryland to USC so don't freakn tell me that it can't be done. It can and will be up to the coaches and players to make that happen but it absolutely can happen. All this doom and gloom is a little over the top, overreaction. It can and will get much better.

We are now officially lowering the standards for our recruiting, justifying we are okay with a bunch of 3 stars because MSU is somehow doing well

It's not the frickingg stars that matter!! It's our coaches not being able to develop talent.

I somewhat agree and also disagree with all this. I think what Op means is that a three star in year 4 or 5 will equal a 4-5 star in year 1-2. I am sure in many cases this is true...but the main thing is the ability to sift thru all the 2-3 stars and be able to spot those that are ranked way lower than they should be for whatever reason.
Look at it like this- look at a typical NFL roster, and you find MANY great NFL guys that went to BFE U. Like Jerry rice went to prairie view. Theoretically, if we had some rainman dude that could pick all of the nobodies every single year, we could load up a team full of 1 and 2 stars that would beat the shite out of everybody including bama, but for whatever reason, all those little nobody schools always wind up with one or maybe two 1 star stud that could play day one for Ohio state or bama, but they just never get "found". Long post, but actually made me feel better that maybe if our recruiting would look a little harder or try a bit more, maybe we could be a school that could find a few of these diamonds in the rough and not have to fight bama and everyone else to get them. Who knows. I'm really worried about our depth tho.

I agree with what you are saying, but players like jerry rice come once in an entire generation. There are some players that are just too OP to defend. The one thing that is a major plus for LSU is that it has really nice recruiting, hence why there are so many players in the NFL from the school. Let me be more specific with what I said. LSU can develop certain positions, like DB's and LB's. But the entire offense for the past 5 years relied on skill, so many players were drafted bc they had the skills, but the school couldn't develop those skills for the right usage in college. This is why it's been some time since LSU has won a national championship

You know, had the 2011 defense been pared up with mettenberger offense, we would have been one of the most dominating teams of all time. It still grates on me that we (looking back) were so unfortunate THAT ONE year we had a shitty defense. This whole dynamic reminds me of late 80s early 90s saints. Had the dome patrol defense that allowed about 7-10 points per game, produced turnover after turnover, and freaking Bobby Hebert and wade Wilson et al for QB...great D and no O.
