Should employers help their affected employees?

Big debate at work today among the workers. They think the company should be providing some sort of help since we were all off work last week. Like gas cards or gift cards for food.
I told them it is highly unlikely that this company will do anything at all for them but stranger things have happened.
Did your employer "help" you in any way? Other than employing you.

They sure in the hell shouldn't be "expected" to.
My company gave some of us gas. We have our own fuel trucks though.

This is why people need to learn to save money. For a rainy day. Makes me wonder how bad off these people really are if they are hurting for gas/food money after a week without work.
I have over a week's worth of pay in my savings. I probably have close to a month's pay, and that is after having paid off 3.5K in CC debt and 5K for school recently.
Should their work help? no
would it be nice if they did? yeah it would.

My company put employees up in hotels, and gave out MREs & water. I was very surprised, but happy they did it.

I don't think it should be required or expected, but yes, it's nice.
After Katrina my dad's company stepped in with generators, tarps, money, etc. After Rita they did not do the same for their SWLA employees. My parents actually got a tarp from a competing company that my uncle worked for. In that scenario I could understand being pissed for not being treated the way the others were, but in general don't think it's warranted.

I subscribe to the philosophy that corporations shouldn't be required to provide assistance or should be expected to provide assistance. It should be on the individuals within the company to decide what his/her personal responsibility is.
But it is a nice gesture when the corporation provides help.

I am on salary and they didn't make me take any vacation days so I am grateful for that.

i think this is about the only thing they should do. They are not responsible for your personal possesions.

We paid our people for the entire week as though they worked. Did not charge PTO. Very fair to all no matter what level. Had one employee flooded and others can donate their PTO to her if they choose.

i slept on the office couch for a week for free with a/c
but no shower, stove etc...microwave and water
and I was and am very grateful
but it was a beautiful thing to sleep in a bed late Sunday night when they did get the power on
eta: and Im salaried. and I didn't and wouldn't expect anymore than what they offered

Damn. That's nice.
We're not getting anything, nor do I expect anything. If my boss wanted to help out that would be cool, but the reality is we didn't get any billable work out the door last week, so I don't expect them to have the money to help out. We're a small company and income is directly related to billable hours. That leaves little room to pay employees 40 hours for no work. That's why I put money in savings every pay check.

We only got paid for Wednesday. I was actually scheduled off for Thursday and opened back full time Friday.

I'm getting paid my regular salary for last week but I kind of expected to get it. My work load has stayed the same and I have to catch up everything I missed which means overtime this month and working some weekends this month. The company I work for has operations in other states though.

For Gustav my company drove down a gas truck from Indianapolis and let us fill up our/our families vehicles until it ran out. They also paid us for every day we were scheduled to work and more to those who lost houses or vehicles

I'm a salaried manager in the construction industry and was paid for last week in full at midnight Monday night before the storm hit. I was paid for this week this morning, so I didn't not miss a check. I did however put in damn near 40 hours last week by working both weekends preparing and cleaning up after the storm.
The company's hourly workers all got their 40 last week without having to take vacation or sick time.
