So, as usual, all military personnel are doing a great job helping out with post Isaac situations. I hear they are giving away ice, and since I still have no power, this is perfect. I go to get a bag, and to pick it up you have to drive-thru a parking lot and they hand you a bag carside. My cooler is in the back seat driver side, so when I'm handed the bag I swing it around to the back and POW! My shoulder is dislocated! This has happened a few times now, but still hurts like hell. I get out, put the truck in parking first mind you, and ask for help. The first soldier is reluctant to help me, but understandable, due to liability issues I guess. Then, what I believe is a higher ranking officer, helps me out. I tell him to lift my arm as if doing a backstroke. 3 seconds later the shoulder is back in place. We shake hands (that hurt too) and thanked him. True story.

Ouch.

I've heard if it happens once, its easy to pop out periodically.

Yes, I have dislocated it three times already through "tough" accidents. After that, three more times doing "normal" things, like the one described above. At least I know how to pop it in again, but hurts like a mother@&$@ every time.

externally rotating and extending your shoulder with moderate abduction against the resistance of a load is not a "normal" action. Learn to keep your elbow near your side when you lift something and it will not continue to dislocate. If you must lift it higher than that keep your arms infront of you and your hand pronated.

To reduce the dislocation when you forget and move something wrong again, lie on your belly with your shoulder hanging off the edge of the table/bed. Apply gentle traction toward the floor while interanlly rotating the shoulder slightly.

Good Luck.

FWIW I think every soilder should be taught how to reduce simple extremity dislocations.

Excellent advice, thank you. I will keep this in mind.
