I'm trying to set up a second computer in the house and Comcast says I have to use a wireless router. I have a two year old wireless router that was installed in my old house and both computers were in the same room so the tech that hooked it up turned the wireless portion off. Now I need to turn it back on so that I can get my remote PC to work on it and I can't seem to figure it out. Is there an easy answer to this, or do I need to have an expert come out and fix it?

have you tried typing this into your address bar on your browser: 192.168.1.1

It should allow you to go change all of the settings

It's asking for a username and password, but I don't have the password activated to log in everyday, so I don't know it.

well, if you didnt change it, then it will probably be:

username: admin

password: password

If its older i think it might be admin admin, but im not sure.

3. configure your router

That might help

Actually the default for an older Linksys is a blank username and "admin" as the password.

Newer ones are admin:admin

admin:password is Netgear.

and if it isn't default, there's a reset button on the back that you can push in with a pencil or paperclip or whatever. While the router is powered on, hold the reset button in for several seconds.

Okay, thanks for all the help. I got the remote PC working so that it has wireless internet access, but there is a problem.

When it pulls up a list of connections available, it has mine and two of our neighbors that are within reach. Theirs say "secured network" and mine says unsecured.

How do I get it secured, or is it secured and says so if someone else sees it, but says unsecured on my PC that is supposed to be on the network?

If you go to 192.168.1.1 on your browser it will enable you to change your security settings once you enter the user name and password information.

I no longer have a Linksys router so I can't tell you exactly what section the password settings are under. This is copied from here: LINK

quote:

Set Up Wireless Security
Click on the Wireless tab, then click on Wireless Security. Change “Security Mode” to WPA Personal. Type your password into “WPA Shared Key” and press “Save Settings”. As soon as you save these settings, the router will boot you off the wireless network. You will have to reconnect by supplying the password from “WPA Shared Key”.

I don't really have anything to add, but I figured it would be a dereliction of duty to not drop some kind of assinine comment here. I don't think I've ever seen you actually start a HELP board thread.

I don't think I've ever had anything important to add, but I've seen these threads get some help and laughs at the same time, so I figured it couldn't hurt.

And I did PIIHB after I got it working.
