Part II: General speed questions, and please recommend a router

My iPad is working now, and will work through the night. When I get home tomorrow ill have to restart the router in order to connect the iPad, phones, computer, etc.
I'm not really sure what's causing it, other than the router crapping out. Any (useful) suggestions on what I can do to fix this, other than buying a new router?

UPDATE
Part II:
I have the Cox Preferred pkg (25 Mbps (don't know what that means)) and I'm thinking of jumping to the next one at 50 Mbps. I play Xbox and MrsWafer (no pics) is also on her computer or kindle while I'm on. The Cox website lists the 25 connection as best for music and surfing, and the 50 for gaming and movies. Is it worth making the bump?
And Part II, Sec. B:
What kind of router should I get if I stay at 25, or what should I get if I make the bump to 50?

Seriously, I was having the same problem and I had to buy a new router. Of course, mine at the time was like a ten year old Linksys, but that's what I wound up having to do.

What brand router do you have? This sounds similar to my problem. As long as my iPad is home all day, it will remain connected. But many times I have to reset the router in order for my phone or laptop to connect if they haven't been connected to the home wifi all day.

It's a plain old Netgear router that's about 5-6 years old. I'm kind of impressed that there are 4 replies and they're all semi-serious.

That's not totally true. My router is 3 years old, and I have been having issues for a year or so.
COX says for some reason I'm not getting the connection right. Something about when my 'number %' is below average.

Not at all. you dont need that much bandwidth. just 5Mbps to watch a 1080p movie.

If you are with Cox, just use their cisco DOCSIS 3.0 modem/router all in one

Any router you can buy new today can support more than the bandwidth cox offers. Way more. So it comes down to how much you want to spend or whether you want a future proof device. Brand wise I go with d-link

Pretty sure they only sell docsis 3.0. So you're good
From what I have heard they are accurate unless you are pulling from a server that is across the country. Cs would know more about that. What speeds are you getting?

Cox's dns servers blow so when your ip lease expires they fail to assign you another one via dhcp. Or it assigns a bad one.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do I "fix" this or keep my performance at its peak?
And I'm assuming that if my speed is listed on the Cox website at 25 Mbps, that's the peak and probably a number I'll never reach.
