Running Shoes

Has anybody owned any Hoka One One running shoes? They have the Clifton 3's on Running Warehouse for 89 bucks. I ended up buying a pair to try was wondering how good they were.

I recommend Hokas to some of my patients. Some people have trouble getting used to the maximalist/zero drop feel.
I have a pair. I find them very comfortable for standing all day, but for running they just weren't comfortable to me.

Hokas are not zero drop shoes
Altras are great shoes and are zero drops.
Go to Varsity or LRC and get fitted.

The Clifton 3s are a great lightweight, highly cushioned, neutral running shoe. A good daily trainer for people who don't need added stability or control in a shoe. Obviously, the fit is unique, and the sizing in certain Hoka models can be strange.
You should go to a specialty store and try some on to see if they're for you. Don't just order off the Internet before trying on would be my advice.

They are like every other shoe. The drop and cushion vary depending on the style.
The Cliftons have the least drop which is 4mm.

I would not recommend. They have too much cushion and I can feel it depress too far on the rear outsole. I Really like Brooks (Adrenaline, Ghost, Beast)

I got these BCG shoes at Academy for $20 to cut grass in. They were so comfortable that I started running in them and cutting grass in my Nikes.

The closest store that sells Hoka'a are at least a 1 to 1.5 hour away. I went ahead and bought them at Runners Warehouse because they have free return shipping and a 90 day return policy. I normally would like to try running shoes on before buying but in my situation, it was not an option.

My current running shoe is Brooks Adrenaline (2016 model). It is a comfortable shoe and never had a problem with them. However, they are starting to get worn out and I was wanting to try something different. A couple of my National Guard buddies use only Hoka's and they swear by them. I was really wanting to get a pair of the ON Cloudflow running shoes. They have a lot of good reviews but I don't know anybody that owns a pair. Plus, I haven't broke into paying $140 or more for running shoes.

If I take a break from my VFF, I greatly prefer the Altra Escalante to Hoks or Brooks, but personal preference.

I run in Torins for long, Escalantes for shorter stuff. Just order some One 3s. Also ordered some Saucon Kinvaras which have been my shoe forever. Always buy one pair a year.

Old School New Balance

quote:Question about terminology. I've had several pairs of Brooks (newest model was from 2015) in which the most notable aspect was what I call a "negative heel" - i.e. instead of a big clunky "air" heel supposedly providing me impact support, there simply is nothing. I can stand upright and then roll back onto the non-heel (almost far enough to lose balance and fall over backwards.) Question: is this the definition of "zero drop"? I went to the store yesterday and tried to find some and it looks like all the manufacturers (Brooks included) have gone back to adding these bulky heels.

My wife has a pair she used on the treadmill. She's not much of an outdoor runner, but she loved these for her running. She also wears them out and about. I rarely do that with my running shoes. She keeps trying to get me to try a pair, but after a bad case of Achilles tendonitis several years ago, I pretty much stick to stability shoes by Brooks. Either Adrenaline or Ravenna. I just don't want to drop $90 on something that I may not like and end up cutting grass in them.

Zero drop means you have 10mm cushion throughout the shoe.
4mm would be 16 in the front, 20 in the back.

I like Vibrams. Running in those solved all aches and pains of wearing shoes. I'd barefoot run but rocks hurt and pavement can be pretty hot

I don't see as much anymore. Then again I need a support shoe, so they never did much for me. I had a pair of Asics that were pretty minimalist, but that's what I was training in when I hurt my Achilles.

Doesn't answer your question but I am a huge fan of Mizuno running shoes. I currently have the Mizuno Wave Rider 19's (12mm drop). I have tried Brooks, Saucony, & Pearl Izumi and love my Mizuno the best.
