I completed my annual wellness exam and was very surprised to see my cholesterol jump up on LDL from 100 to 165 and total cholesterol shoot up to over 250. I have put on a bunch of weight and ate really bad this year but wasn't expecting this. I'm giving it three months of dieting and exercising before getting another test. Anyone have a similar experience and success getting it down without medicine?

Whole30. Research it. Not saying you have to stay on this forever but it's the best diet to kick start a lifelong journey and by far the best diet to get cholesterol under control.

You are going to be OK.

1. You need to get a full lipid panel and look at not only particle size/density, but amount of particles present. You should tell your doctor you want the full panel and have him go over the results with you, if he refuses or doesn’t know how to interpret the results, find a new doctor.

2. It would not hurt to get a Calcium Scoring Test as well but you will pay out of pocket.

3. You may, or may not, be someone who can tolerate a higher saturated fat diet. Do not start worrying over it and start moving. Clean up your diet with heavy cruciferous vegetables and lean protein (WHole 30 would be good but do not go overboard on the oils until you get your new baseline (via full Lipid Panel) after a couple of months - for the LOVE OF GOD do not start a KETO diet until you get the panel done and then go for it if you can tolerate it.

4. Take 3 G of fish oil daily, K2+D3, Slo Niacin 1 gram. There are several other things to add, but those will start kicking in quick. Do not be scared of good olive oil (a lot of it is not pure EVOO, so make sure) Get a handful (15 - 20 Grams) of walnuts every damn day. Do not take Red Yeast Rice until you have given all of the above a few moths.

5. I preached against statins for years, but, depending on your age, statins are your call and not the call of your Doc. Read up on the side effects. Be aware that some Docs (Dr. Brett Osborn) use moderate statin doses for the anti-inflammatory properties they posses. I have not started statins as my HDL is soaring on my supplement protocol. Become your own doctor and do your research.

Fark, I recently had some labs done and my LDL was a little high (125). I had also asked for a CardioIQ test which Quest labs didn't classify the readings as in range or not like they do the other tests. With that said, my doctor didn't interpret those as good or bad either, almost as if he didnt know. I suppose maybe I can get another opinion but wanted to see if you had any experience reading things such as LDL PARTICLE NUMBER, LDL SMALL, LDL PEAK SIZE, APOLIPOPROTEIN B, Etc

LDL is tricky and high LDL does not necessarily correlate to a future cardiac event and many researchers now think low LDL could increase the risk of certain cancers. Take a look at this: LINK This will help you understand your readings from a full panel a little better. I think number of particles is the most important.

I am not sure of your age, but once you hit 30 you need to become the captain of your health and ask for appropriate testing. Some testing you may pay out of pocket but the prices are not bad and the tests are infrequent enough to warrant their expense, plus your health has no price tag. If you can find a place where you live to get a DEXA scan, get it done (bodyfat and bone density) Use all of these as your new basis and get your shite in a pile and start living healthier. Drink a lot of water and put the booze down other than a drink or two on the weekend - not so much that it will impair you from exercise the next day. Your sleep needs to improve and is crucial to your overall health. If you snore tell your Doc that your snore and/or toss and turn and insurance will foot the bill for a sleep test.

Lastly, make sure you are getting a full hormone panel. Get your Testosterone, Estradiol, T3 and T4, and IGF-1 tested.

We are all gonna make it.

Listen to this man, he knows what he is talking about. You need to get all of the testing done he talked about.

What was your Ratio, triglicerides, and resting blood sugar?

Farkwad seems to know much more on this than I ever will, but this link from Chris Kresser might also help. Functional medicine approach to high cholesterol

Chris is a great researcher and very compelling as are these guys( LINK) and several more. All of them vary to a certain degree and all of them agree on certain points; i.e, Inflammation must be managed. Once the OP gets a baseline and can start on some simple protocols and radical lifestyle adjustments, he can start to track his health in a more concise manner. The body will try desperately to get into a state of homeostasis and anything that is a little off is a sign that an adjustment(s) needs to me made; even if the “offf” parameter is genetic, there are protocols that can be adminstered to correct or circumvent a genetic predisposition from tuning into a life-ending event.

There are also extremes, see “How Not To Die” by Dr. Michael Greger. It is an extreme no oil whatsoever based diet. However extreme, I know a few people who have drastically turned their health markers around. I am not a proponent of his diet, but think everyone’s research is important to glean another perspective on health and longevity.

Cholesterol Code

An interesting theory.

quote:

Before talking about cholesterol, we have to talk about the energy you get from fat when on LCHF. Of course the main reason for food is to supply your body with energy. But how does that energy get to everywhere it needs to go in your body?

This guy naturally has high cholesterol. Once his number were correct, ratio wise, he noticed the trend of avg movements btw the numbers. It is worth a ten minute read.
