Im playing in my member/guest on Saturday. I have never played in a golf tournament before just the weekend money game with my weekend group. We are playing best ball. From the tees we are playing from I'll be getting 22 shots and my dad is getting 15 shots. He hasnt played in a couple months so I am not sure what we will get from him.

So Im thinking should I just play conservative and go for bogeys every hole. Unfortunately, I play "nerd" golf so on Par 4s should on my approach shots hit to a comfortable number if I dont feel like I can reach the green? Then hit the green in three and two putt for bogey?

My goal is to come in Top 10. I think there is around 30-35 teams. Any advice is much appreciated.

I wouldn't play conservative just play smart depending on the hole. A better way to play is just add a stroke to par on every hole, so par 4s are now playing as par 5s. Better to think you're going for a par than I need this for bogey.

That's what I do when I practice sometimes. It just Im playing from a further tee than I usually play so on my second shots I dont wanna over swing to try and reach a green that I likely wont reach.

If you absolutely can't get there lay back if that makes you more comfortable. If it's going to be a long shot take the club that's the right number and just make a good swing. If you come up 10 yards short, you still have 3 shots for essentially par. Don't over complicate it.

You're getting 22 shots, and you're trying to come up with a strategy?

May I suggest to you that you should drink copious amounts of alcohol, and have zero fricks to give?

I could do that but I would like to get better and not come in last place. Golf is really the only sport I can play now so its just me being competitive and have a good showing.

Yeah unfortunately in the past 8 years, I have had 4 major surgeries, lost a ton of my intestines, lost about 70lbs, and have an ostomy bag so Im just happy I get "to play" golf.

Advice - since you're getting 22, relax and swing the club. Don't shoot for a number, just try and get something repeatable in your swing and go with it.

The less pressure you put on yourself the better.

That is the nice way of telling you to get pickled and DGAF.

Seeing how it seems that the tournament is based on handicaps, the winner will be based on who "beat" their handicap or played the best relative to how they normally play. Just ignore the fact you are playing in a tournament and go out there trying to play 1 stoke better than your average / last game. 1-2 strokes is nothing (my damn game swings 10 strokes between good - average - crap) so there isn't much pressure there.

Plus some a-hole has lied or sandbagged their handicap and is already at a 4-5 stroke advantage. Not as much so as a scramble, but similar to a scramble you need to just play your best / comfortable game, luck and pencils win these tournaments not skill.

The past month I have had a 83 and 98. My game is all over the place. I think thats my biggest problem I dont know what golfer I am going to get.

That and the "luck" part is why you need to just play relaxed. After you take a shot (and find the ball) immediately forget everything about that last shot and make the next one. Don't add your score during the round (best to let your partner keep it anyway so you are completely in the dark) and don't do anything else to add unnecessary pressure. You shoot in the middle of that (~90) or lower and you have a strong chance of placing based on handicaps. You shoot that 83 and you win the damn thing.

Don't think beyond your shot or about the past. Just focus on the pin, your current shot, and swing that club as smoothly as possible.

On every putt outside of 10', imagine the whole as being 12" across, and you just want it to get there. Basically "layup" every putt >10' so you have easy 2nd putts. You may luck up and drain one but you damn sure will avoid a lot of 3 putts. I started doing this a couple years ago and my current putting average is 1.66 per hole.

Thats what I usually do I am decent at putting and I am usually able to 2 putt greens with an occasionally three putt in a round.

No flights just one day event. I would like to do well. Just wanted some advice because never really played in a golf tournament before that isnt a charity scramble. Last I checked, there were 35 teams so I would like to come in Top 10 but it would be awesome to win it all.

Just brother in law it. I'm guessing you and your dad have different strengths, play to them. Don't force crap you don't have in a shot. Keep it in front of you and everything will be fine. Just enjoy the day, don't focus on winning.

Find what's working that day and use it. If it's a 7i, hit every drive to a 7i distance.
