I've been around the golf industry for while and I would say I have a pretty good understanding of shafts. I play KBS Tours in stiff flex and albeit never been a long ball kinda guy (7i is usually around 155-165) I know it'll be straight with a slight draw everytime. Irons are my strength.

The other day, I was visiting a customer on acreage and he was telling me about his new Mizuno JPX 900s. He's an older guy and had the Project X 4.0 - 60 gram shafts in it. He offered to let me hit them and I was thinking to myself, "this is going to feel like a noodle"

They were the most stable shaft I've hit in a while and ball rolled out to 175-180. Ball flight was not higher than my average and I felt the clubhead through the entire swing. This sound unusual to anyone else?

Were they graphite shafts? I play steel project x 5.5 and they're not that heavy.. Around 115 grams. The shafts are stable with a stiff butt end. My complaint is the lack of tip feeling, especially in the long irons, but that's how they're designed.

These are what I play and they can be pretty harsh. But I'm a fast tempo guy who transitions quick so they were really well for me on full swings and draws. They're tougher on 3/4 swings and when I'm trying to play a cut.

Not unusual at all. There isn't an industry standard for shaft flex so what is a regular flex in one company may be closer to a stiff in another manufacturer. Also, length determines flex as well. A stiff flex with added length is actually slightly less than stiff flex at normal length.

On top of that, they all have different kick points and tip stiffness. So the shaft you hit of your friends may fit your swing profile more than your shafts for a number of reasons.

Personally, I don't fit well into project X shafts. True temper and KBS for my swing but for some reason i balloon all my shots in a project X and dispersion is all over.

Also should be noted that the JPX-900s are bent a bit strong. I'm not sure what your irons are but I'd bet that the 7 iron you hit of your friends is about 2-4 degrees stronger than what your 7 iron is.

TL;DR: that's not abormal at all.

Not unusual. I just put in some DG x100 and probably picked up 10 yards on my irons. Now I also added .5" to all my irons so that's a factor.

Appreciate the replies. Been bugging me since Monday.

I was in a PX 5.5 for a while and then went to the KBS in a set of Ping i20s. Really like the combo.

These were 60 gram 4.0s in graphite.

Never considered the lofting being different. Lower loft + "weaker flex" would keep the ball flight about the same as what I got now but carry a bit further. Makes sense.

After gaming them for over a year now this is still my issue. Hit it way too high. Currently switching them out and back to TTS300.

You guys talking about switching shafts, how much does it cost to buy all new shafts and have your set reshafted? Are y'all doing it yourself?

I buy them on eBay. Cost wise depends on the shaft itself. I play true temper dynamic golds and they're well under $100 for 4-P. I started building since I couldn't afford to buy all the ones I wanted to try

A heat gun, epoxy, and steel brush is all you need. I don't have a vice either, just twist it off when it's hot enough. I haven't successfully removed a graphite shaft yet, it usually melts the shaft so I'd take that to the golf shop. For grips just use a box cutter to remove and then double sided tape with solution. It's cheap online.

I have PX 6.0 in mine as well. Not sure if they are flighted or not. I hit them high but I like it that way. The course I play has tree lined fairways so being able to hit high and get over them helps me out when I spray a drive. The greens are also hard as shite so it helps me keep them on the green. It gets a little tricky on a windy day though
