I've played once a month-ish for 8 years, and I look like a competent player with a driver, wedge, or putter in my hands. I hit my driver 230-270 usually kind of straight, my wedges save rounds half the time, and my putting is streaky like everyone else but my irons are just dog shite. 130-170 yards I have no hope. I usually either have a hard pull or just shank it, and every now and then I'll do what I think I'm supposed to.

I'll shoot 85-95 on a easy course and 90-100 on a good one, and I think I could easily improve 5-8 strokes with just decent iron play. Any general iron advice out there?

Post a video or even better get a lesson. You're not gonna get any lasting advice maybe just a temporary fix.

Do what I'm doing, take 2 weeks off, I had a stretch of really good golf over the last few months and the last 2 rounds I've lost my iron game, it sucks but it will return, if that doesn't work then buy new clubs, that's probably what I'll do

Start hitting every iron at 3/4. Focus on clean contact. This will help you control the ball on approach shots and may eventually translate into overall better iron play.

if people would shorten their swing and focus on tempo/rhythm vs hitting their 8i 160 they would enjoy the game way more.

Couldn't disagree more. A bad swing with great rhythm is still a bad swing.

Curious, can you hit your 9i or 8i? If you hit your wedges we'll do you not have the same consistency with the 9i-7i?

Sure, but its easier to make a better swing with a shorter, slower tempo swing. Its when guys try to touch their left ear with their backswing and swing 130 mph that you see SHTF.

Never...Ever...Ever...teach someone how to play golf!

the swing is not meant to be slow. The game is not built on a slow-swing/tempo platform! There is a HUGE difference between "slow" and "smooth," which is the word you are apparently looking for. and in actuality, The "slower" you swing, the more likely you are to make a mistake while swinging

longer time=More time for disaster

When I slow down, I tend to decelerate.

Smooth =/= slow

In fact smooth CAN = faster

I think this is a good way to get out of sync quite honestly. The reason why most people flip is because of a lack of intuitive weight shift. In order to do that you have to feel the weight of the club at the top, this requires patience to wait for your brain to do that calculation.

Many people are too upright, that makes the backswing longer and causes you to rush the downswing. I think most golfers could benefit from getting more bend from the hips, NOT knees, at address. That will shorten the swing by itself.

A few things come to mind.

1.) You're trying to hit the ball rather than swing the club. There is a difference. Hitting an object will cause you to strengthen your grip and have a "grip it and rip it" mentality, resulting in flexed muscles and rigid inconsistent swing. Fix - choke up on the iron, and swing like you have a stick of butter in your hands and you dont want to squish it.

2.) You might have the wrong flex and you're losing the club head in your swing. I use to be a tweener flex and I struggled with consistency because sometimes I'd load the shaft a bit to much for it and it turned into a noodle. FIX - if you dont feel that you're shafts are week/strong, tinker with ball position. Try moving it up in your stance for you lower lofted clubs. 7i is a ball left of center (right handed player), 6i is 2 left of center, etc.

Just a few thoughts.

To clarify my prior post, I think beginning a practice or warm up hitting 3/4 shots with a focus on crisp contact has led me to better iron play. I have not shortened my swing, this is just part of my practic routine. My pregression when practicing or warm up is to hit a lot of wedges then move to 3/4 irons then full irons.

This whole discussion is pointless. We all have different swings. It is impossible to give this man advice without first seeing his swing. Do yourself a favor and get lessons instead of looking for answers on a message board.

This^^^^^

like fixing a broken bone without a xray. Only thing I could take from it was he hits the driver well and shanks his irons some. Maybe swinning up on his irons too much and leeading into impact with the heel of the club. Swinging up on a driver is good irons not so much
